Exposure to DragonLance- Novels or Gaming first?

I'm curious how others were first exposed to the DragonLance realm, more specifically whether they first came to be a fan through the novels or the Campaign Setting via D&D/SAGA.

Personally I first came across DragonLance through the novel line, I was vaguely aware it was a D&D setting but hadn't given it any attention.

I'd long been a fan of Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's work through their other novels so I naturally looked for other books written by the duo.
I came across the Chronicles trilogy and from there the rest was history.

I guess it is gaming for me, though a more accurate thing to say would probably be the DragonLance boards. :D

I was introduced to DL through gaming first, when I bought a beat-up old copy of Dragonlance Adventures (as well as Greyhawk Adventures) from a pawn shop in Independence, MO (suburb of Kansas City). I would later find out that Margaret Weis once hailed from Independence, and has even gone to the selfsame Renaissance Festival I've been to a few times.

My best friend had told me about his DL characters, and I just had to get the book. He would later run me through Knight's Sword, and I was hooked.

I read Chronicles and Legends while in college, after picking up DLA. I would later pick up Tales of the Lance, and have played or DM'd several DL campaigns throughout college and afterwards.

After Dragons of Summer Flame, I played in this Cataclysm-era DL campaign we called "The Fallen", which became the campaign that we judged all other campaigns by. To this day, I have never played a better campaign.

I took a bit of a break after that campaign ended, and had thought that my time with DL was nearly at an end, save maybe for the occasional novel.

Then, something very special happened. The Whitestone Council came together, and the Dragonlance Nexus was born. That began my in-depth involvement with the setting, and I haven't regretted it one bit.

My love for Dragonlance was not only rekindled, but strengthened as well. I've been very fortunate to participate in the DL receptions at GenCon, to get to know some of the big names, and have been fortunate enough to get my name in print. Don't get much better than that.

I've also been very fortunate to meet some really great friends, including all my friends on these boards.

The books, for me, back in '87 I think. Not knowing where the line began, I ended up picking up the Legend of Huma first, and was quickly hooked. By the time a year or so later that I did read Chronicles and Legens, I had become a True Believer.

I literally started on Dragonlance when Dragonlance started. I had a little delay, of course, since I grew up in New Zealand and it must have taken a few months for the books to be released there, but my circle of friends were reading Dragons of Autumn Twilight and running games using DL1 Dragons of Despair all the way back in 1984-1985. I can remember seeing the Dragonlance modules hit the shelves in my local bookstore, with the immortal name of Tracy Hickman (who at the time, I was sure was a woman) that was familiar to me from the Desert of Desolation modules, which were among the first I ever played.

I've been fond of Dragonlance since the beginning, in other words. It's truly amazing to be working with the current stable of creators, writers and visionaries.

Cheers,
Cam

I read the Chronicles first. This was before I even got into roleplaying. It made me want to hunt down the D&D game and get playing.

The Chronicles were what got me hooked on Dragonlance! That trilogy is the best piece of litterature I´ve read to this day! Not even the migty LotR comes close! (please don´t burn me on the stake for saying that!) I read the novels in the very early 90s and started gaming shortly thereafter

To be honest, I enjoyed Chronicles better than LotR as well. You're not alone.

It's an easier read, if that means anything. Lord of the Rings has extensive world lore which doesn't appear in the book yet which makes a profound influence on the events, so it's one of those situations where you really need to read through a Middle Earth glossary or encyclopedia to understand some of the references.

Tolkien's influence on Dragonlance is strong, stronger even than it is on D&D in some ways. But, Dragonlance quickly evolved out of that similarity with Legends and has taken on its own mythos. Always a good thing.

Cheers,
Cam

I concur, the trilogy seemed to flow much better.

My experience with dragonlance started when I was in sixth grade (that's like seven years ago now), with Dragons of a Spring Dawning. The weird thing was, that I read the Chronicles backwards, because that is how they became available at the school library. Then, as if it seemed proper, I read Legends backwards.

For the longest time I didn't even know that Dragonlance was even tied to a D&D as a game, until I bought Dragonlance Classics.
