What happens in those rare instances where a PC is whisked off by a Summon spell of some variety? Do they retain memories from the encounter? Do they gain xp? If they are slain do they stay dead? Are there alignment repricussions from throwing away human lives in pointless battles?

There is an adventure in the Great Modron March that deals with the players being summoned by some wizard to the abyss. This was a botched (or perhaps corrupted) summoning, though, so this may not be how a typical summoning works.

In that adventure, PC's retained memories and most of their free will, although they had to obey the wizards commands. Being killed in the adventure meant the summoning ended (for that player) and the body was returned to the spot it was summoned from. Survivors could collect fallen comrads and raise or ressurect them.

I would say that they gain XP. And according to the rules of summoning you merely reappear where you started without taking any damage. ALl the damage you sustained during the summoning was merely damaging to the magic that was binding you there.

Summons, from what I've read, act much like Astral Projection.

Your real body stays behind (or, perhaps, is simply converted in to an 'energy anchor', so that you're not fodder), while a projection of you is formed in the other location.

You keep all memories, but you're own physical body is never at risk.

Unless, of course, your silver chord is found... (Those astral juggernauts have to eat, neh?)
