So what will Athas look like in 1000 years?

A thri-kreen hive, swarming with bugs? A necropolis, ruled by Dregoth?

Any ideas...?

With only one SK left, a halfling called Kevin Costner? :D

Sorry to the Kavin fans...

Anyway it can be even darker. No cities left, all of them is ruins. Only very isolated small communities, totally self sufficient. Big empty deserts, zero plant life, sandy wastes and Sea of Silt mostly. Animal/monster life is even rarer, but the remaining ones become even more tougher critters to survive. But you could walk for a two weeks and not finding any of them. No wandering tribes, as the only chance for survival is to stick to the only well known in a month wandering range, as in the new wastes it is impossible to find water even for the best ranger or druid...

How does it sounds? Could be a bad environment from gaming point if view, but can be a good encounter or 3-4 session story as a glimpse into the future if the SKs and the Dragon are not stopped... Maybe a dream that brings the players to the future...

It sounds perfect, that's exactly the sort of idea I was looking for.

And yes, you got it exactly right - I'm looking for a sort of "future flash-forward" to give to the players...

Any other ideas?

There's always the return-of-the-mutant-space-halflings-riding-giant-space-hamsters-and-wielding-anti-matter-rifles future scenario...

Thanks, but I was hoping to leave Spelljammer out of it...

Drats! There goes any of my input.

Seriously, do you plan on introducing the Dergoth, Thri-kreen Empire, or Ancient Halflings scenarios any time soon? If so, use the future Athas as a foreshadow to a soon to come adventure. for example, if you plan a little excursion to the Jagged Cliffs to learn about the Blue Age and Rhulisti halfings, make the future one where Rajaat creates his twisted mockery of the Blue Age. Athas really is a water world then, but perhaps the drain has finally caused the sun to snuff it, it now is a small, dark orb in the sky (a small brown dwarf star). The pristine blue age that Rajaat sought to bring is now a cold wasteland of frozen seas and glaciers. Still no plant life, no food, and no hope for survival.

Or for the Dergoth scenario, he takes over the Tablelands, genocides the rest of the plant, and becomes a god. His ascent to godhood alters the su as per the blue age scenario, but now its a freezing cold, dry desert (think Gobi desert for real world example). The dray are dying out, freezing in the ruins of the former city-states that they conqured a thousand years ago.

Just a few examples.

Mars-like is my take - the world is dying, and without some serious and significant changes to the world, I see it as a desolate wasteland with nobody left on it, and incapable of supporting life. It might be 1000 years, it might be a little longer. I figure at some point someone realizes this and possibly transplants people from Athas to other [material] planes (after figuring out how to).
