I am thinking about running this for some newbies. I read through the Castle Caldwell adventure and it seems pretty lame. 20 some odd rooms with some random creature sitting in it. Kobolds in this room, Bandits in this room, a snake in the room next door, etc. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : Habronicus Date : 08-25-03 09:52 AM IME, B1-9 is not the best option for a group of newbies. You're better off playing the single modules, specially B1 and B2 which are much more detailed on their own. The B1-9 maxi-module is a little too condensed for my taste, but with some tweaking it makes a good campaign. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Algolei Date : 08-26-03 05:58 AM What Habronicus said. As a compilation of all the adventures into one source, B1-9 does a pretty good job. Alas, every adventure they included couldn't be covered in detail, so some lost their heart and spirit. If you've got the incentive, it's pretty easy to spice up the lamer adventures with better monsters/NPCs/story-lines/etc. If you don't, I'd recommend doing what Habronicus said, or else just playing specific adventures from B1-9: And if I could find my copy, which has suddenly and mysteriously disappeared (I detect a faint hint of puff-of-smoke in the air as well), I'd tell you which ones. Well, you can probably figure it out for yourself. Some of the adventures in B1-9 are fleshed out more than others. :D -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : SputnikCorp Date : 08-26-03 10:56 PM i found this module buried under alot of old material i thought i gave away. i'm starting over my campaign at first level and there's a couple of classics i want to DM. "horror on the hill" or re-titled "the hobgoblin king". i played this years ago for OD&D, this time around i'm converting it over to 3rd. although the dragon at the end is way to powerful, even a juvenile would waste a 1st level party. i'm planning on expanding this adventure into a campaign, the monastary would be devoted to tharizden and the BBEG would be the head cleric. and of coarse the all time classic: "keep on the borderlands" or "the caves of chaos" in the rewrite. i find this adventure now rather trite, years of hard gaming has changed me. it would suit the noob, as it was intended (i know my first ever game was "the keep") -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : Sardan Date : 08-27-03 02:21 PM The HackMaster remake - Little Keep on the Borderlands is a pretty good adaption. I would recommend it to anyone thinking of running or expanding the original Keep on the Borderlands. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : Dragonchild Date : 08-28-03 05:31 PM It is what it is -- a compilation of modules, many of which are behind the times, now. Bear in mind D&D in its fledgling days was mostly dungeon crawl. D&D adventures today are more well-rounded, demanding plot and NPC development. I wouldn't throw it away, though. Monetary value aside, the only thing B1-9 needs is fleshing out, and that is precisely how it was meant to be used, anyway. Don't think of them as adventures that need a lot of work; think of them as aides to original adventures you'd make on your own. You'll wind up doing more than half the work on some of the "modulets", anyway. Let's face it; two of the most tedious tasks in D&D are drawing maps and populating areas with inconsequential monsters. B1-9 takes care of both, so you can concentrate on stringing the adventures (of any order and number you choose) together with a plot of [I]your[I] design. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:18 AM.
