I was reading about the Rule of Threes yesterday, and liked the idea. How many examples of the Rule can you come up with? Obvious ones include the Nine Hells, Inner Planes (soesn't Planescape have 27, including the quasi+energy ones--can't remember name for them), 3 Transitives, and the "666 AByss" theory.

Any others?

Transitive Planes - Ethereal, Astral, and Ordial(Theorized)

Planes of Existence - Material, Belief(Outer), and Substance(Inner)

Three Moral Alignments - Good, neutral, Evil

Three Ethical Alignments - Chaotic, neutral, Lawful

Three Races of Demodands - Farastu, Shator, Kelubar

Types of people: those who can count and those who can't

making the inners threeish is a stretch, there are 4 elementals, 4 paraelemental, 8 quasielemental, 2 energy, 8 hypothesized quasiparaelemental...only 26 unless you count ethereal/shadow/quintessence or something

The only way there could be considered 27 is if 'The Inner Plane' is located.

So I'll get back to ya on that.

Elemental Planes, Negative Quasis, and Positive Quasis make for three levels of the elements (if you look at the model for the inner planes that has the Neg and Pos on opposite poles of a globe). Three layers of the Beastlands, and the Grey Waste, and Pandemonium (I think) and some others?

The (former) triumverate of Sigil law: Harmonium, Guvners, Mercykillers.
The three towers of the Yugoloths: Khin-Oin, Tower of the Arcanoloths, Tower of Incarnate Pain.

Psychologically, I think the Rule of Threes works for PS because, obviously, with three of something it can't be divided into two groups. The middle-ground to morality and reality and the way that nothing ever breaks down so simply really define the character of the setting because it adds so much depth.

Pandemonium has 4 layers, Ms. Factol Lady ;)

Three races of Celestials: archons, guardinals, eladrin

Three Ways to the Gray Waste: Yggdrasil, Styx, Olympus

Three planes of conflict on the good side, three on the evil.

I think the best part of the rule of threes is in those places where the writers left only two, such as: The Lady of Pain, Aoskar, and ??? or The Spire, the Outlands and ???

There's 15 factions, which is five threes, which leaves us with one block of three threes, no matter how you cut it, and one block of two threes, which makes me wonder what three sects idologically make up the third of the second set, and then which nine make up the third block of three threes?

You remember the movie Pi? (A number that starts with a 3, by the way): "If you look for a number, you will see that number everywhere!" Now we've got a supposed rule of threes, the idea that if you look for threes, you'll always find threes, and ..... ... ... another idea to be determined.

Ok, maybe some of that's a bit of a stretch, and I should put my tinfoil hat back on, but on the other hand, maybe it's not too much of a stretch, when you consider many of the conspiracy-oriented themes in Planescape.

Hmm..... that last paragraph was composed of two thoughts.....

The Cambion in Sigil named Rule-Of-Three

The Deva in Sigil named Unity-of-Rings

The ? in ? named Center-of-All : supposedly a freakishly powerful Aurumach Rilmani at the base of the Spire in the Outlands. But perhaps we're looking in the wrong place, and the wrong species...Perhaps we've seen Her before, bladed shadow and all... just a thought...

And I wouldn't try to draw too many connections between The Lady and Aoskar or anyone else. Aoskar was a chump. Now he's a dead or quiescent chump floating in the Astral pierced through with blades...

[drops in character]

"3 levels of Pandemonium Rhys? Someone got the lines of communication from that ever so spooky and mystical Cadence of the Planes crossed again."

*snicker*

"Something tells me you should act less, and think more. Or would that go against your faction philosophy. Oh... thats right, you're technically not a faction anymore. That whole sorbid business with The Lady's edict and all... too bad about that..."

*snickers again and walks off with toadies and groomer-guards in tow*

Number of toadies it takes to wax Shemeska's hind end: One to put on the wax, one to rip off the fur, and one to pick up the pieces.

*shows restraint due to that tiny fraction of self-preservation he retains*

Lore-mistress that she is, I'm sure Shemeska knows 999 ways to kill a berk.

(that was ooc actually, but I can run with this)

*hands Clueless a pen* "You take dictation? Good. I'll grace you with my words, and you write them down?"

"And that was all a statement, not a question."

*relaxes on a cushion and starts waxing poetic on the many subtle and none so subtle ways of killing random berks.*

"Waxing poetic. See, I do wax things, and not what was suggested earlier, or anywhere else. What were you all thinking I meant?"

*cackle*
