I'm just reading up on PS, and its damn cool. I also have the epic book and I'm wondering how would/will Union be fitted into the cosmolgy (if at all!!)?

My opinion: Union is a joke. It's an attempt to recreate a place with everything Sigil had, but devoid of The Lady, devoid of the factions, and devoid of the flavor and history that Sigil had built around itself.

It's a dumbed down Sigil built to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Most of the attempts I see to improve Union and make it more flavorful and more realistic end up making it a pale shadow of what Sigil is.

I don't think the idea behind Union makes much sense, or given its defenses that it would last a month against any number of Archfiends or any dozen potential powers interested in the demiplane.

If it exists in your planescape or planar campaign, thats fine with me, but its more apt to be something laughed about by people in Sigil than not.

There's a thread on Union over in the Epic Level Handbook boards that I've bashed Union in, and given some lengthy details on how to use Union incorporated into a Planescape game, so you might care to look it up.

End result: I don't like Union for a number of reasons, and I don't use it in my own games. If you want a city that resembles Sigil use Sigil itself and not a watered down version called Union. Besides, mercanes...

Union is lame. I ignore it's existence in my game.

In answer to the original question...;)

As I understand it, Union is a demiplane, probably of the prime material (given 3e's cosmology). It was created entirely in Epic HB, and did not exist during the time PS was published. The best way I can think of to view it is that it's sorta a "small town", while Sigil is the big city. I can probably serve as a minor trade post run by Arcane (er, mercane if you don't know true name for that race), who were kicked out of Sigil and decided to show up that uppity Lady...;)

I won't get into the Sigil v. Union debate (much), since I do not own EHB. :D

When it comes right down to it, it will be no more known than any individual planet. Almost nobody from Greyhawk or Faerun would have heard of it, and few Sigilians would even care if they -did- hear of it. Epic shmepic, Sigil rests above the home of the deities.

Union is not an attempt to recreate Sigil in any way, at any level.
Union is far more like a normal planar city.

1) There are not inherent gates in Union, except for perhaps the varying planar gate and prime gate islands(which seem very controlled)
2) Union is not "important" enough for factions or the Blood War.
3) You`d probably need Gate spells to reach it, for the most part.
4) Little known obviously, as it is only about eighty years old

Union is fine, it is a Sigil wannabe, so real bloods only go there to shop. My prediction is that it will be 'blowed up' by some force in the not too distant future. It really doesn't have anyone too powerful protecting it - and yes I am aware of the sentinals. It does serve a purpose though.

Yes, that is right. It attracts all these clueless sods who think they are important because they got past 20th level. That way the remaining planes need not to tolerate their presence that often.

Keep your Epics under control, send them to Union! That works like kindergarden ;)

No doubt, Kilamar, think of the headaches that are saved by making a bunch of self-important primies mere guards.
