Does anyone have a map that can tell me how to get to a dedicated In Character board? Frankly, I've found that when I try to help out in my own way, I get harrangued and insulted. I thought this was a DL board, but some people just can't accept the fact that there are Kender in DL. I try to talk about Dargaard Keep, someone says, "You can't talk about Dargaard Keep because you're in character." I try to offer help on geography, someone says, "You don't know anything about geography, you're in character." How do you know I'm not like this anyway? It reminds me of a story. . .Oh, nevermind! Since some people just don't appreciate the vast wealth of knowledge I've collected on my travels throughout Krynn, I only want to hear from other Kender on this one. Is it me? Is it something I'm doing wrong? Did I not devote enough skill points somewhere or is there a feat I can take that would allow me to be the way I naturally am? It seems to me that the sponanaety is out the window. What do you think, we'll take a vote, should I keep trying to help people out or should I just pack up and go back to Hylo?

I've registered there now, and it looks as though there are online scenarios that you can post to, but not really any in character discussion about Krynn that I could see. Let me ask you something, RandPC, I've noticed your posts on this board and it seems that you and I value diversity and the concept that the DM has final say in whether the PCs can be heroes no matter what feat or skills they had the foresight to take, even though they didn't know they needed them. Do you think it's too disruptive to address gaming stats and things of that nature "In Character"? I like helping people out if they need assistance, but if I do it in a way that I feel is fun and supportive at the same time, do you think that's going over the edge? I put a great deal of time into trying to address the topic of the discussion, but at the same time, bring a little of the flavor of DL into it as well. If someone has a laugh, great! If someone doesn't, why do they always feel they must ruin everyone's fun? But it could be that only I find myself amusing, which is why I started this vote. Who wants to see me gone?

But I couldn't get either of them to work. They may have changed since the post. But please feel free to cast your vote!

Hm, the Planescape boards are a haven for in-character conversations. If you become a Planewalking kender and decide never to talk about Krynn then that's the place for you.

:D

In fact, Shemeska hasn't been out of character in years! Sadly, that means she's always making us think about her naked Arcanoloth form. My MINDS EYE!

I appreciate the input, but I love talking about Krynn. I've read nearly all the novels at least 5 times each, adding more detail to the maps in the atlas as I went along, I've read both the new and old sourcebooks (in fact, I have them next to me right now and know them by heart), been DM on countless adventures in Krynn, and honestly harbor a true love for the story. But I can't take it anymore. I want to know once and for all, who wants me here? The bigger and more unselfish question is, "If the topic of dicussion is addressed while in character, does that violate the rules in the Code of Conduct for this forum?" I want to know how many people appreciate the added flavor and how many just want aggrivating little "gamers" like me off the board.

Haldon - You may try posting in the DL.com general discussion board if the role-playing one doesn't suit you.

Also, if you're not feeling welcome or if there is a problem on the boards, then shoot me an e-mail or private message. I don't want anyone feeling unwelcome.

Thanks!

Two things frustrate me about your posts. The first is that you post in one large paragraph which is next to impossible to read. The second is that you post in character, which distracts from what it is you have to contribute and really doesn't do anything to make me want to navigate the one large paragraph.

I know it's an exciting and flavorful setting, and nobody disputes that kender and gnomes and minotaurs and elves and gully dwarves all have their own unique and interesting take on things, but you are not a kender any more than I am a red-haired half-elf. A good friend and colleague of mine, who goes by the nickname Kipper Snifferdoo, is exactly the kind of kender fan folks enjoy seeing on boards like this. I'd suggest taking a look at some of his posts, or his site www.kencyclopedia.com for his own approach to message board etiquette.

Cheers,
Cam

Positive or negative, I'd like to know what you guys think, and I appreciate it. Part of the "fun," I feel, is sorting through all the babble (which usually serves as an allusionary and topical anchor in the discussion.) But, I admit, it may only be fun to me. The unbroken, single paragraph adds to the function of this "Kender Speak" idiom. But we have a solid vote for "Go back to Hylo."

Thank you for the input. The vote is now: 0 - stay / 1 - go

I realize that I am not, in actuallity, a Kender. My friends would be far less in number. So I'm not some Tom Hanks 'Mazes and Monsters' freak with a personality disorder, I simply enjoy entertaining and aiding others. But I don't want to waste any more of my time creating inventive posts if I am the only one who appreciates the effort.

Thank you again,

If you mean the links to the old UBB forums, they wouldn't have helped anyhow, as those boards were all set to read-only when we got these ones up and running. Looks like the old boards were finally deleted.

Regarding the main topic of the thread, it is not a CoC violation to speak "in character" so long as one sticks to the topic of the thread in which one is posting. (Incidentally, we do have IC forums in the Community section, but the setting is not Dragonlance.)

I've posted In Character in otherwise Out Of Character places, so I know how difficult it can be for people to take your posts seriously. Portraying a kender, especially the way you do, seems to increase the problems tenfold. My main suggestion would be to break up your posts into paragraphs. Really. I know you're attempting to emulate the rambling, rapid-fire manner in which excited kender communicate, but how long does a non-kender on Krynn sit still and listen to an excited kender before either interrupting or throwing his hands in the air and running off? By being kender-like, you suffer the same problems as, um, 'real' kender do on Krynn: nobody takes them seriously. Separating your paragraphs with something like

::The kender pauses to take a deep breath.::

Will make your posts easier to read without forcing you to get out of character. White space between paragraphs is much easier on the eyes than a single gigantic block of text, and mixing actions into your posts tend to make them more interesting to read, or so it's done for me.

I hope that helps.

:otes firmly for 'Stay'.::

Yeah I agree. I'm badly dyslexic, so when I see such a large block of text it is hard for me to read it without getting a huge headache! Some white space would be good. Other interuptions could be:

:: The Kender stops and admires a beautiful pen he found in his bouch. WizO_Jedi shouts, "THATS MINE!"::

[i]:: All talk stops as the Kender suddenly realizes he is the center of attention. He takes a moment to adjust his topknot. ::[i]

[i]:: The Kender stops, reaches up and tugs your sleeve and with pure innocence gives you your steel pouch. "You must have dropped it. Where was I?" ::[i]

Those seem good. And keeps you in character, while having fun.

Rosisha, don't even think about touching my spell component pouches!

Can't say as your posts have really bothered me at all personally.
You've stayed on topic and answered the inquiries put to you.

Granted, posting incharacter does tend to make your posts a little long winded, and requires a bit of adjustment on the part of the reader for those that are accustomed to the straight forward OOC answers that are the norm here.

It's not my style personally, but so long as your on-topic in your posts I can't say as I much care whether you answer in-character or not.

Adopting a bit of real-world sentence/paragraph structure would make your posts considerably easier to read however.

I would like to thank you all: RandPC, WizO_Jedi, and Rosisha, for the constructive criticism. And let's not forget the vote! 1 - 1.

I really wish to continue posting here as there are a great number of insightful and entertaining members on this board. It also concerns one of my greatest loves.

I'd also like to thank Dragonhelm for the honest concern, but I only started this thread seeking the opinions toward me and my style. I really have no complaints about any other member here, but a question did come up in one of my previous conversations and I felt it paramount to seek clarification so as not to offend any of the other wonderful and conceptually mature individuals here.

It's very refreshing to have heard from you all, and I shall adopt the suggestions put forth on this thread (I'm slightly dyslexic as well, so editing the posts before I click "Submit" will be much easier too.

And so, to end this thread in true Kender fashion, I'm ending the vote at a tie and doing what I want to do.

STAY!

Again, thank you all for your help and suggestions. I hope I don't get on your nerves too awfully much in the future.

Love,
Haldon

Well if it does, we'll just tie your topknot to a barstool!

Haldon, I'd like for you to stay as well. There's no reason to waste a perfectly good kender. ;)

Just some thoughts on how you can do the in-character stuff...

You may want to make sure that everyone knows when you're in character. For example, put "IC" for "in character" and "OoC" for "out of character". Or you could put everything IC into italics, or label when you're going to start and stop (i.e. to start and to stop).

Now where's my helm...?

::Shuffling through pouches.::

This seems to be much more variegated than the huge block of text and allows for more adaptablility on my part when addressing topics. This works great! I can give a serious answer and allow the kenderism to shine through in other ways.

I'd like to thank you guys again for your help. It's really nice to hear everyone's opinion and reach a common room, uh, ground. I don't want to detract from anyone having a good time here.

Oh, and Dragonhelm, I'm sorry if I got on your nerves posting after the FAQs. The translation of all that babble is that I think, even though Soth works well as a Ravenloft Domain Lord, He's always going to be a part of Krynn to me.

If I step on anyone's toes in the near future, please let me know.

I knew a kender once who had his topknot tied to a big water wheel outside a mill. He almost drowned, but he said he never got thirsty and it's the cleanest he's ever been in his life.

I'm thinking, millwheel-water, barstool-ALE!>

Thanks again guys. I hope to see you around!

Love,
Haldon
