Melf has some history that I know of, but I can't claim to be all that well versed in this famous figure of Greyhawk. I know he somehow exceeded his level limit, is (was?) a memeber of the circle of eight, and has a few spells named after him. What else can you add to this?

He's a member of the Circle? of Five which includes Zagyg, The Mage of the Vale, Melf. I don't recall the other two off the top of my head. Its in the Greyhawk Ruins module {WGR1} if you want to look it up. Other than the names, there is not a lot of information about the organization.

Melf was originally a PC of Luke Gygax. In actual play he was a neutral good gray elf that reached 11th level as a fighter and 13th level as a magic-user.
He did appear in the Gord series. He was cursed to sing a song at every sunrise, or something like that, and he was given a last name in the novels that I can't remember right now.
He had an artifact called the Spear of Zagyg, some of its powers were detailed in the Gord series.

Ring of Five: Zagig, The Black One of the Vale of the Mage, Leomund, Melf, and Serten. (WGR1, page 3 for a bit more of that).
However, this information is printed under Rumors, so you can take it as you like.

@ makoma: In FtA Melf appears as F13/W12, NG with chaotic tendencies. He also has some nifty magic items and knows a lot about evil lurking in Oerik.

He is listed at those levels in 2nd edition but you've forgotten to give his title.(Was that because it is not common knowledge?)

He was listed at a grey elf of 5'8'' and 147lbs around 200 years old.

His full name is Prince Melf Brightflame, though the princely status is not well known. So Melf Brightflame will most likely be heard, even among the Knights of Luna when strangers are around.

@Amaron Blackthorn: I know of Melf's Acid Arrow and Melf's Minute Meteors. The Wizard's Spell Compendium will contain any I have left out, but keep in mind that the stats are not for D&D 3.x.

Melf is one of my favorites. I recently tried to find the Circle of Eight pdf download but for some reason it has misteriously disappeared. Interesting...

Can anyone provide a link to that one?

Prince from Celene (I think, to few brain cells left to be certain).

Unless there is another wizard running around Oerik with the name of Melf, he also invented Melf's Minute Meteors. Has anyone seen a 3e conversion of this one anywhere?

I'm not sure if it was included but someone here did a whole bunch of conversions and they were all collated and made into a PDF and posted on Canonfire. Not sure of the title of the PDF.

If that is the one that I am thinking of, it only covers the spells from the old hardback book.

Good to have those ones converted though, no bookworm will be safe! :D

well the spells bearing his name first appeared in the 1e Unearthed Arcana... as to where the first time Melf himself is ever mentioned... I am unsure.

So whatever became of Melf the Elf? Did he go out with a bang or a whimper?

The LGG has him still a member and acknowledged leader of the Knights of Luna, Wiz14/Ftr4. There's a drawing of him and Prince Corond of the Principality of Ulek in battle together in the Pomarj.

I think except for that brief mention, that is the only information about Melf in the LGG.

It's called Greyhawk Adventures 2e to 3.5e Converted Spells
and it's here:
http://www.canonfire.com/htmlnew/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=84

As someone mentioned though, it's just the spells from Greyhawk Adventures, which is the circle of 8 mages, Melf isn't included.

As a somewhat related bit of fun, here's a picture of the Melf action figure (LJN Toys, 1983):

IMAGE(http://www.toyarchive.com/Dungeons&Dragons/Figures/MelfLoose1a.jpg)

And the accompanying "bio" on Melf (who was also known as Peralay, which is the name I've given him, Prince Peralay Brightflame, because Melf is kind of stupid, imo):

Coming from a race of magical forest dwelling beings, the elf fighter is able to combine all the best traits of many beings. Able to use magical spells as well as weapons, this fighter is a truly powerful enemy to all creatures that would do harm to the forests and to those who love nature.
Count on the elf fighter to come into battle riding a giant giraffe or some other magical mount with his magical sword flashing over his head.

Elves riding giant giraffes...
That's an interesting mental image...

As for my recollections on his role in greyhawk canon:

Melf is a cousin of Queen Yolande of Celene (hence his Prince title). He strongly disagrees with her position of neutrality in the affairs of their neighbors and created the Knights of Luna, a group of Elves (and others) who are active in those affairs.

He is a close friend and ally of Prince Corond of Ulek, and has helped in that nations struggle against the Pomarj orcs.
