Does anyone know what the creatures on the covers of the revised Dark Sun boxed set are? There seems to be a lizard man riding a silt worm but I though that lizard men had been exterminated in the Cleansing Wars. More significantly, what are the flying creatures? I can't find any references to flying insect mounts anywhere.

The creatures on the original boxed set are easier to identify (humans, mul, tarek), but there are a couple of tough ones with kind of scaly skin - are these supposed to be gith?

In both cases, I'm not talking about strictly the box cover only, but also the interior books and on the revised set, the DM's screen.

Some lizard men survived and live in the Last Sea - but they don't wander about the deserts, as a rule. The creature could be a ssurran, who look a lot like lizardmen.

The flying insects are probably jalath'gak or some kind of giant bee. Jalath'gak are used as flying mounts, but have to get pretty big in order to be able to carry a rider.

I think that the scaly guys on the 1st boxed set are supposed to be nikaals. Anyone else have any ideas on this one? There is a fat bloke of the same species on the cover of Arcane Shadows (and the back of Amber Enchantress, too, iirc).

(I thought that Grummore had a write-up on the long snake things and had called them sand drakes or ptutops or something. Am I right, Grummore?)

Grummore here! On the Revised boxed set, it's Pterrans that ride these strange creatures. As for these creatures, no real description or information on them as ever been published by TSR or WotC. In order to have these as athasian creature, someone as done a conversion or created it and it was put on the Nytcralwr site www.crimsonsun.org. Although, after analysis, Nyt and myself though that it was faaaar tooooo big. Ptutops was their original name... which is pretty lame IMO :D We changed is name for "Slimahacc".

Information about Pterrans will eventually come out. I am working on a project about them

Oh yeah, slimahacc - that was it

I had another look and they are probably pterrans. I guess you can't see their crests so well because of the silly hats they are wearing...
