Is there any tinkering in the 3.0 Dragon Lance Campaign setting? I was flipping through the book but I couldn't find anything talkining about that.

Thanks,

There was supposed to be something on tinkering rules, but they were taken out in the editing process. I imagine you will see them in a future supplement (possibly a handbook on races, or possibly War of the Lance).

For now, I would just stick with Craft, Knowledge, and Profession skills, set a reasonable DC, and take it from there.

Anyone else have any other suggestions?

While not quite the same flavor nor how I would really run tinkering, the Gnome Artificer from I think Forgotten Realms is a decent base to work from. But there are some weird things about it that would need tweaking.

It's a start, though.

The gnome artificer is, IMO, a great representation of what a tinker gnome could be. As a matter of fact, the Whitestone Council was considering using the gnome artificer as a basis for a Master Tinker prestige class for the DLA3e project (prior to the licensing of DL gaming to Sov. Press).

Typically, when you think of a tinker gnome, you think of a gnome in his big laboratory, creating complex machines. This really isn’t conducive to game play. The gnome artificer showcases a way to use a tinker gnome in game play effectively, rather than having bulky mechanics such as what was found in Dragonlance Adventures.

There is also a prestige class in Faiths and Pantheons for Forgotten Realms called a techsmith, IIRC. With some tweaking, it would work well for an adventuring tinker gnome as well. One of its abilities is to create a Gondsman, which could translate nicely into an Autognome (borrowing from Spelljammer here).

One thought I’ve had is to create a system based on the gnome artificer, to where the gnome discovers new device powers as he goes up in level. Not only would some device powers duplicate spell effects (i.e. Burning Hands becomes Flamethrower), but one could also create original device powers as well.

Granted, that route would probably result in an entirely new sourcebook (Gnominomicon?).

Anyway, those are some general thoughts.
