... Was going to be 'The Middle of Nowhere'. When it came out, it was by Paul B. Thompson, and maybe a year late. Does anyone know what actually happened here?

He didn't work out, and the book was given to another author.

Cheers,

I have the e-mail to the mailing list that Kage posted regarding this book, which I will copy & paste here (or I suppose I could just tell you how to find it in the archives... oh well).

Well, here's the gist of it anyways:

Subject: The Middle of Nowhere
Date: Tue, 6 Aug 2002 02:24:55 +0000

"What's up with it? Well now, that's a long story. Here's the brief version. It starts with me begining a book a couple years ago and taking a heck of a long time to finish the rough draft. Because of this, Wizards had to pull the book from the publishing roster, which is why you saw ads one month, and the next month it disappeared without a trace. Rough draft finished, I started work on revisions, and again, I took a very long time doing them. Ultimately, before the revisions were complete, the editors at Wizards decided they wanted to bring a co-author in to finish the book. Since I'd been doing a dandy job of botching it in the first place, I readily agreed.

Originally, the arrangement specified that the coauthor and I would both receive byline credit. Sometimes, however, the editors call for large-scale changes to a manuscript. I've been told the coauthor had to rewrite the book nearly from scratch. The WotC Book Department decided it would be only fair to give the new author sole credit for the book. I whole-heartedly agree. I simply would not feel comfortable putting my name on something I didn't write. If the novel has changed that much since leaving my hands, I certainly don't want to accept credit for it."

Hey, you never know when such e-mails will be useful down the road.

And I only keep the important/interesting/funny ones.
