Do you think that a wizard who journeyed to the Elemental Plane of Fire could meet another wizard from say, Forgotten Realms? It seems in 3E most worlds are trying to stand alone, but I kind of wondered about this.

My initial reaction would be to say yes. I've always thought of the different worlds being able to interact, just they usually don't because it isn't easy. Problems that arise are things like... clerics and gods, wizards and how magic works(e.x. Dragonlance and Dark Sun).

I dunno aobut the plane of fire meeting. But probably on the Astral plane.

However, an old old issue of Dragon magazine (#17 I believe) had an interesting view of the worlds and their planes. It said that each world (and all it's corresponding planes) exist in a crystal. What i'm guessing is that the various planes are similar to White wolf's spirit realms and the crystals are parallel universes (Like in "Sliders" on TV).

I think of the realms as being different "galaxies" and with the right kind of machines, one could travel between realms. With magic one can create all kinds of portals between 2 places. Some connect to different planes or realms, some to past and future, all is possible. that crystal theory reminds of the movie Grinch which sucked:P

Another possibility is that a realm is nothing more than an aquarious in the house of someone else. the people who take care of it are the Gods. Imagine a group of children in a school, with a pet in a cage. Instead of a pet we have a group of people. Then we have the baddie in class who only causes mischiefs (takhisis), the preety girl(mishakal), the sports kid (paladine), and so on and so on. Summer vacations come and they have to leave for some time (Cataclysm). Sometime later, one of the kids go to another school, (Takhisis dieing) but before that she shoves the sports kid into the cage (Paladine loses mortality)

Your first paragraph just paraphrased exactly what i said. Parallell universes, not alternate planes. and the Crystal analogy reminds me of Men in Black, whcih was a decent film (though I abused it and can't watch it anymore).

I personally consider most of the planes to be shared by all worlds.

HOWEVER, it is likely that each of these infinite planes has a patch of real estate that metaphysically corresponds to locations on the Prime.

Thus, there is part of the Elemental Plane of Fire that is "close" (in planar terms) to Toril and another part that is close to Krynn. Since the plane is infinite, and since likewise Toril and Krynn are presumably distant from each other on the Prime, it is likely that their corresponding areas of the Elemental Plane of Fire are quite distant from each other. Thus, it is unlikely travelers from either world would meet there.

As mentioned, the Astral is a bit of an exception, mostly because distance is an illusion there. It exists mainly because people believe it must. But since it actually doesn't, it is possible for people from lots of different worlds and planes to run across each other there.

Can a Rose Knight meet a Red Wizard of Thay? I would say so. How? One word, Planescape.

Now can that encounter happen officially? No.

As was stated earlier the 3.5 D&D worlds are meant to stay apart from one another. The crossover days of 2nd Edition AD&D are long gone.

I like the new Dragonlance Cosmology, but not as much as the original D&D Cosmology that sprung Planescape.

In an effort to keep the new Dragonlance Cosmology and some of the old flavor, I use Sigil, the City of Doors, as a “Nexus Realm Point” where anything can happen. Hell, one of my players is running a Qualinesti Bladesinger who is also a member of the Society of Sensation. Great thing about the Factions is that you usually don’t have to swear an alliance to any deity.

Say in the Elemental Plane of Fire a wizard from Dragonlance decided to journey to the City of Brass. Yes i know its mostly Efreeti and all that, but I would assume there would be people and monsters from other worlds. The City is a very popular place in that plane.

I still say the worlds are connected at least a little. Maybe not by a lot, but theres still a little bit there.

Well obviously unique locations do not have an analog for each Prime world. So locations like the City of Brass, Sigil, the Spire of the Outlands and such all exist only once and are not linked to any one Prime world. Thus, planar travellers from many worlds meet up in Sigil for example.
