Weekly Greychat, tonight:
Thursday, December 4th, 2003
8 PM Eastern Standard Time / 1am GMT (friday) till whenever!

If you could get 5, 10, 15, 20 pages on anything in the world of greyhawk, what kind of stuff would you like to see?

Come chat about any and all things Greyhawk, or whatever else is on your mind (within reason of course, it is a Greyhawk chat after all) in the world of gaming.

We're there all night, so don't let being late scare you off!

As usual, the chat takes place on the Psionics.net irc server, and there are two basic options for those wishing to come by:

Point your irc client to:
Server: chat.psionics.net
Port: 6667
Channel: #greytalk

Irc clients are advanced chat programs, such as mirc, pirch, trillian,
etc. Visit http://www.psionics.net/downloads.html if you don't have an irc client and would like to download one for free.

If you don't have an irc client, Psionics.net and Canonfire.com have joined forces to make the chats accesible to you! Visit
http://www.psionics.net/chat/java/chat1.html to use the handy Java interface.

Once the applet loads, just replace -guest- with your desired nickname for the chat and select -greytalk- from the drop down channel menu. Then click the -Connect Now!- button and voila, you're chattin in Greychat!

Look forward to seeing everyone there!

We were really on a topic last night to bad their weren't enough new people their I believe that's what they wanted a forum which pretty much stays on topic/topics. I only wish That I could of stayed on longer but sleep is something you have to take once in a while.

Yea, it was a good on-topic discussion last night. I thought the size of the crowd was good - just the right size for the breadth of the conversation.

I too would have liked to stay longer - how late do some of you guys stay up? LOL, I logged off at 10:15 pm my time.

May I make a suggestion? If there's a specific topic planned, perhaps putting this notice up on Wednesday or even Tuesday might be helpful, as a little advance warning? I usually avoid the Thursday chats, as more often that not there's too much anti-Living greyhawk talk for my tastes, but I would have made time for this had I known about it a little earlier. Ah well.

Well, as an aside, regarding the 'anti-living greyhawk' comments that do get made at the chat (by guys like me ;) ).

A lot of what are technically living greyhawk questions are simply RPGA or D&D3.x rules debates. Those are basically off topic for the chat, and painfully boring to those of us who don't partake in either.

But!

If you want to talk about your LG PC's exploits or LG related story lines, etc, that's more than welcome, by most. You might even try just throwing out the topic, without mentioning that it's LG.

Stories and discussions about the Greyhawk end of living greyhawk are well within the scope of the chat and only really draw flames when they devolve into (IMO) boring arguments about how this or that cert/feat/skill/magic item is being changed in the LG 3.5 conversion or whatnot.

The LG Yahoo Group, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/living_greyhawk is a far better venue for the rules/policies heavy LG topics, but if it's a setting/story heavy topic, it's more than welcome at GreyTalk.

Gary, Samwise, and a few others were still chatting when my connection took a crap around 2:00 AM CST.

Actually Samwise gave a rather lenghty description of how LG works, their were only 5 of us on at the time and 3 seemed interesed in what he said, so it wasn't a problem. I never get on before 9 Pac. so there is either a hardcore West Coast group or some of you Easterns have heavy duty insomnia LOL. There are always 4 or 5 left when I leave @ Midnight.

Regrettably I got there very late. (I had to rant on a mailing list. It was a good rant.)

As for anti-LG rants, always bear in mind that when I am there, I am more than willing to tell people where to get off on such.

The problem with setting a topic is that there are no new releases for us to focus an entire discussion on that aren't directly linked to LG in some manner.
The best way to have a topic discussed is to start talking about it until everyone else gets tired and joins in. :D

That's how things got going last night. When I was on we started with some AU info. This started a discussion on warlocks and witches. Then we were discussing reasons why magic now is not as powerful in Oerth now as it once was. In any chat room you visit their are certain sects within sects.

I for one don't play LG but have used some of the information the Triads have created and incorporated it into my own game. The main reason I haven't tried LG yet is due more to scheduleing then anything else. Besides I said it last night most people who flame your ideas don't contribute to the setting itself, therefore I take the flame with a grain of salt.

I like construtive criticism. This means criticism that not only explains why you don't agree with a persons perspective, but shows that person how to make corrections or elaborates on things that could of been better.

Samwise usally posts things and asks those who disagree with him why they disagree with his take and why they think it sucks. I on the other hand hate power gaming and campaigns high in magic use. But have read articles which promote these topics that I didn't agree with but thought were well written. The problem most people have is someone not seeing their vision. For me every one's vision is different. That's one of the reasons I make change's in my game. It's not always due to poorly written material, alot of times it could be good writing that doesn't suite my vision of GH.

The important thing to remember when criticising someone's work is why you don't like it. Are your reason's for disliking something because it's poorly written or not thought out well, or is it well written but does not meet your version of what you see in that campaign world. When you can associate this difference your criticism is appreciated. But when your only reply is a half-hearted it sucks, it's not good, or it's cheesy no one is going to take you seriously, at least I won't.

In the end how thick is your skin, or how willing is the community you chat in willing to work on making it a friendlier enviroment.
