I'm a first edition gamer that recently came back to the fold. I want to reimmerse myself in Greyhawk but it would seem a lot has happened since the eighties. I had the red box set (some cavalier astride a horse, I think), and I've recently picked up the Living Greyhawk Gazeteer, but I'd like to know what products, if any, trace the line between these two products. I'm gonna pick some up on eBay (or through that svgames place), but I don't have a ton of cash to spend. Which half dozen or so Greyhawk products would bring me up to speed?

Thanks for helping out a fellow gamer.

You should definitely try to pick up From the Ashes, the main setting product before the LGG. Basically it's the campaign setting, the other products are supplements.

I'd say get your hands on Ivid the Undying, free on this website, and Dungeon Magazine is now putting out new Greyhawk material so check that out now and then too.

If you like Iuz, there was a product entitled Iuz the Evil although I'm not exactly sure whats in it.

There are plenty of other products as well but From the Ashes is the real big one that'll give you the most information on what's happen to the Flanaess after the '83 set. The other books cover certain areas.

IIRC, the trail goes like this:

World of Greyhawk Player's Guide
World of Greyhawk Boxed Set
Greyhawk Adventures
Greyhawk Wars Boxed Set
From the Ashes Boxed Set
Iuz the Evil
Marklands
Ivid the Undying (not published, click link in my sig to download)
Player's Guide to Greyhawk
The Adventure Begins
Living Greyhawk Gazetteer

If you've already got the LGG, then that is as up to date as it gets. The format, however, is one where most of the details are hidden within the gazetteer entries on the nations. So in effect, you kinda have to read the entire thing to see what has happened between the WoG Player's Guide and the LGG.

However, Coldpenguin's suggestion to pick up the From the Ashes supplement (don't even bother trying to get the hardcopy as it sells for up to $100 US) is an excellent one. It's pretty much the beefiest of all the supplements and if you're a fan of fluff and flavour and having GAZILLIONS of plot-hooks for adventure, then FtA is a definite must have. Then again, some die-hard 1st ed. players despise it. Personally, I think it's one of the best sourcebooks written for any setting, ever.

Since Ivid the Undying is free (and yes, it's legal to download), I highly, highly, highly recommend getting it and printing it out. You can actually get a better, formatted version of it as a PDF from www.acaeum.com. Not sure if this version is legal though...

Personally, I love Marklands as it details two of my favourite areas of Greyhawk, ie. Nyrond and Furyondy.

Iuz the Evil is a definite must have if you intend on including the Old One as a major antagonist in your games. It details his kingdom and machinations in depth.

The Player's Guide and Adventure Begins can be missed, IMO. They DO have relevant information in them that can be useful, however for the most part I find them to be of little use if you've got the LGG.

If you're an eagle-eyed shopper, you can find those Sargent works (FTA, Marklands, Iuz, but also City of Skulls) for about thirty bucks a pop on eBay. I did.

Take caution with Greyhawk Wars, though, as it is basically a board game and has little or no redeemable value as an RPG.

Roger Moore's work, however, is better than others would have you think. Adventure Begins has a complete layout of Greyhawk City, but then again, so does the City of Greyhawk box set, which is also pretty good.

In a grudging nod to Delglath, Ivid the Undying is an amazing work and should be read by any serious Greyhawk fan.

So there it is.

! Marklands and Iuz I'm not surprised about, however FtA is almost universally $90+ If you can snatch up copies of FtA, do it! And then sell them for a mark-up. Hell, if I could buy on ebay, I would!

Well, there IS the story of the Greyhawk Wars which I personally quite like, however at the same time, that is also free on Wizard's website, although I can't find it anymore... it'll be online somewhere.

Temple of Elemental Evil
Star Cairns modules
City of Greyhawk (box set)

Emeperor Norton would like to know which eBay you are shopping on, some kind of elusive, secret eBay?

[royal demeaning tone] Thirty dollars, indeed [/royal demeaning tone]

Actually, December's a good time to hunt for rpg bargains, since the auctions on eBay tend to be cheaper at this time of year. I've seen items that normally fetch $200+ go for $50-70, and I've seen FtA going for $25-45 in the recent past.
