Nature of the Greygem?

I have long had trouble exactly understanding the nature of the greygem. Of course such things can never be fully explained and many things about the greygem lead to questions. The biggest question I have though, is why did the greygem fly around transforming races into different races? I assume the greygem was completely or near completely under the control of Chaos. Chaos wanted to twist and corrupt the creation of the other gods, yet bringing kender, goblins, sea elves, etc. into the world doesn’t seem the grand scale of madness he would bother with. Of course he appears to have been limited by being trapped in the greygem and could not bring the destruction he wrought in the chaos war.

The easiest way I see to explain this is that when the greygem encountered life, Chaos would randomly pick a different type of magic beam and each beam would cause specific effects based on what type of life it hit. For example:

Red Magic Beam: Ogres become Minotaurs; Humans become trees; Elves become flesh piles.
Blue Magic Beam: Ogres become boulders; Humans become rats; Elves become sea elves.
Green Magic Bean: Ogres become birds; Humans become Mermen; Elves become shrubs.

I think this systems combines random chaos with enough structure to creature viable populations of new races.

well by creating new races, Chaos (in the form of the Greygem) created a lasting change upon what the other Gods created. Kender especially, seem to cause a mild chaos wherever they go just by there very natures (not violent chaos mind you, but chaos dealing with them taking everything in site..hehe). Chaos was definately weakened while in the gem, but most of the changes Chaos made are still around today (Minatours, Kender, and Dwarves just to name a few).

Hmm, it could be possible that Sargonnas and Reorx would be backhandedly grateful to Chaos for creating the minotaurs and dwarves, respectively. Especially with the minotaurs poised to conquer Ansalon, Sargonnas could be on his way to acquiring more power.

The Greygem was truly chaotic, so there was just as much chance of it obliterating or healing people it went past. One of the major effects, though, was corruption of the shape and nature of beings, and the longer-lasting proof of it is what's gone down as the most significant thing it did.

I don't know why so many people were turned into minotaurs, since dwarves and kender were created at the same time from similar people, and why all these new minotaurs gathered into the same place, and the same for other races, but then, it's just myth.

And now that I think about it - an incredibly powerful source of malevolent magical power... a will of its own, even if it occasionally seems to submit to another person... its destruction was an incredibly important plot point...

It's the One Ring for Krynn, isn't it?
