I'm shooting in the dark here but, judging by what is done in other forums:

Someone from the community must create the FAQ in the first place and post it. A moderator will then make it "sticky".

Thanks, Allan, for making this post.

If Habronicus is correct (thanks for the input, Habronicus), we will need a volunteer. Hopefully, our friendly, local WizO will let us know.

Hey Allan did you PM Wizo Jedi? I don't want him getting the same message over and over, but he by his own admission is not a Greyhawk fan and only checks this board when someone reports a post to him. Just wondering.

What need to be in the FAQ?

A referrence to the LGG as being the most recent printing of the Greyhawk setting. given. What else?

well you see... in general what you do is take the most FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS... and put them in the FAQ ;)

I think that a greyhawk FAQ is a great idea

Other than "Where can i find information on the greyhawk setting?" what questions are popping up often enough to bother the regulars here.

Now that I've rephrased the question, CWSLYCLGH, do you have anthing to add?

Perhaps you'll volunteer to write the FAQ up for this board?

generaly the maintianer of the FAQ will look around the board and find a group of frequenty asked questions to be contained there in. questions asked on the FAQ thread itsef are also often worked into the main FAQ post (generaly the first of the thread).

unfortunaltly I do not have the time to maintian another FAQ (in fact the T&B faq probably suffers some from my lack of time, although truthfuly there hasn't been a lot in the way of changes that need to be made since 3.5 came out), but I will galdly offer advice nd support to who ever does decide to do the Greyhawk FAQ.

Hey, Rostoff, all.

Other questions include issues about Greyhawk gods, information about races (mostly the human sub-races), specific Greyhawk adventure modules, and magic and magical socieites. And, the biggest questions usually involve history - pre CY 578 type questions. There are also Living Greyhawk issues that don't belong here, and may find a reason(s) in the FAQs.

Q: Why is there no Greyhawk material published anymore?

A: There is you stupid git. Look in Dungeon and open your eyes once in a while and you'll see it. Now, run off like a good little Greyhawker and support Erik Mona's obsession with Greyhawk.
--

Q: I want a full-colour, 332 page, almanac/glossography/encyclopedia/sourcebook for Greyhawk! How do I make it happen?

A: Shutup and buy the LGG and Dungeon. Moron.
--

Q: Why is Greyhawk bland and boring?

A: Because you're an idiot.
--

Q: Where can I get Greyhawk information? I want to run a campaign but I can't find any books on it?

A: Buy the LGG and Dungeon. Moron.
--

Q: What happened to Carl Sargent?

A: Gene Weigel killed him and ate him as a sacrifice to his deity, Gary Gygax.

Ignoring Delgath colorful replies I guess we could all suggest some Q&A for the future FAQ and then let a brave soul organize the thing.

I'm afraid I'm not much use because I don't have a lot of Greyhawk material  but I'm doing my best to catch up thanks to the PDF stuff out there.

Anyway, here are some questions you people might consider:

1 - What is Greyhawk?
(A brief explanation of its origins and focus)

2 - How does it stand out from other Fantasy settings?
(Maybe an explanation of the strong emphasis on political struggles throughout the Flanaess)

3 - Are there any iconic characters?
(Mention of Bigby, Mordenkainen, Ivid, Vecna and others)

4 - What is the complete Greyhawk Pantheon and what is their importance?
(A list of Greyhawk Gods and a short description of how the people see them).

5 - Where can I find more information?
(Mention of the several books released for Greyhawk, perhaps in chronological order)

6 - What is the absolute minimum to start a Greyhawk campaign?
(A small pick from question 5)

7 - Are there any fan made resources?
(Links to sites on Greyhawk)

8 - What information is considered "canon"?
(An explanation of how some Greyhawk material contradicts itself because back then there was little concern for canon. Maybe followed by a list of what's NOT usually accepted as "canon").

9 - Is Greyhawk dead/abandoned?
(Maybe an explanation on how new material is still being put out through magazines followed by a note that WotC hasn't in fact put out any new modules or supplements for it in some time).

10 - Are there any conversions of 1E and 2E Greyhawk modules into 3E/3.5E?
(A list of links of where to find them, if any).

Well, that top 10 should give someone a head start. Sorry if I couldn't be any more help.

Ignore Delgath? NO WAY. We might as well let the new people know up front how they can expect to be treated.

That top 10 has spawned more debate and flamewars than any of us care to remember. I just think people will object to #1, 2, 4, 6, 8 & 9 being answered in FAQ format.

That said, it is a pretty good list.

I had not, but just emailed him, so hopefully his floodgates remain half-empty....

This all sounds like a good start to me folks. I think we should also look at the GH FAQs that already exist, and perhaps consider pointing to some of them for responses to questions that others have already asked frequently.

The only FAQs that I can think of, off the top of my head, are Canonfire! and Greytalk, and I'm not sure if the GT FAQ is still around or not.

The CF! FAQs are at http://www.canonfire.com/htmlnew/modules.php?name=FAQ and include CF!, the OJ, GT, and the WoG in general. So, I guess the old GT FAQ was sublimated into the CF! GT FAQ (Rich or Marc can probably confirm that if Gary's not around).

In addition to considering questions and pre-existing FAQ content, what slant/tone/intent do we want the FAQ for this forum to take? That is, should the FAQ be focused for folks who have a passing knowledge of GH, have little to no experience with GH, are masters of GH lore, etc.? That will, in part, color the kinds of FAQs that get put into it.

Err... if you know your GH, then why the hell would you be asking anything in a FAQ? You'd already know it.

The purpose of FAQ's is to inform newbies so that the oldies aren't pestered with the same question, over and over and over again. Kinda thought that was obvious...

I'd aim for one of these two.

If someone writes a FAQ for this forum that I find to be well organized and written, objective, informative, and not inflammatory, I'll submit with WizO Paradox for it to be stickied. If he thinks it's worth putting at the top of page 1, I'll put it there.

I'm sorry, but this is ridiculous!

We, as a community, can't agree on even 1 single point in relation to Greyhawk. How would we coem up with an unbiased, but factual, FAQ?

LOL, more power to those involved and it's not like me to ever have negative input, but good luck!

I'd just stickypost the CY timeline and be done with it...

I don't think the FAQ should attempt to be an in-depth introduction to Greyhawk. Most people who come here probably have at least some knowledge of the setting, and to educate those who don't, one of the answers should direct people to the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer. The best thing to do would probably be to look at other FAQ's, be they Greyhawk FAQ's from other sources or other FAQ's (which can at least provide some suggestions about structure). With the latter in mind, I would suggest checking out the FAQ on the Dragonlance forum (first FAQ for a setting that I found).

I see that there's a new thread asking about Philidor the Blue, and I am sure that there was another one a while back, but it looks like it's been pruned. Based on that, I'm going to agree that the FAQ should include a section on prominent NPC's.

In deed, dividing it into sections woud definatly be a good way to go... perhaps a NPC section, a geography section, a races section, a GH general section (as a catch all for questions not in other sections and to answer questions such as "What ever hapened to Carl Sargent?" which are greyhawk related, but do not hae to do directly with the setting). more sections could be created as needed of course.
