The discussion on I6 Ravenloft in Greyhawk went well, with a lot of good thoughts shared. Continuing in the same direction regarding the use of non-setting specific adventure modules, Rostoff gets us started with the following:

The Desert of Desolation was a pretty good series. I3 was the best of the bunch IMO. It starts a river reflowing where there used to be a civiliztion. Obviously Sea of Dust or Bright Desert. I always thought because the Gods were Egyptian flavored (Ahmen RE), It should be in the Bright Desert. I never pictured the Suel Pantheon as being at all similar to the Egyptian. Now that Rary is there however, I am not sure the Bright Desert is appropriate.

Maybe I3-I5 happen before the Greyhawk Wars, and the possiblility of Civilization re-emerging there is what draws Rary to it?

Anyone that has read the articles in Dragon of the greater Oerth probably thinks of the peninsula called Erypt for these.

I am not sure they really fit otherwise, they certainly don't have a Baklunish feel in my opinion. Maybe a land just to the west of the Sea of Dust if you must put these close to the Flanaess. But as has been stated they don't have a pantheon resembling the Sueloise either.

I find the DoD series hard to fit into greyhawk, athough if I was going to run it I would probably set it on the south western edge of the sea of dust (outside the flanaes)... the fact that the gods mentioned do not have a suelious flavor would not bother me all that much as I would be making adjustments and changes to fit the modules into the setting anyway, and those would just be added to the list.

Well, shoot! I don't have this series in either of its forms. So I cannot comment on it - too much. ;)

But I did note that Tracy and Laura Hickman also authored most of the DoD material, just as they are responsible for bringing us I6 (which we just discussed) and I10. Except I4 Oasis of the White Palm, which Phillip Myer wrote.

I have run these modules and that is exactly where I set them. Just because the Suloise kingdom is an old ruined kingdom, doesn't mean there weren't older kingdoms there before it. Just as it doesn't mean that Suloise still inhabit the Sea of Dust, except in degenerative forms.

There were also a few features described in the modules that fit well with the sea of dust...can't remeber them right now though.

When I was a kid my 1st DM set the Lost Tomb of Martek in the Bright Desert, so I thought the series was clearly set in Greyhawk until GreyTalkers informed me otherwise...

Although the Bright has been described lately a few times, setting the Desert of Desolation series therein could still work. An interested DM would need to synthesize the backstory of the modules with the lore about Sulm and Itar. That great sea of glass could be easily linked to the fall of Sulm, IMO. While djinni and efreeti are most obviously linked to the Bakluni, both of these monsters could be connected to the ancient Flan nomads of the region...

though it is possible it seems to me that the bright desert lack much in the way of the correct geography for the module series... I can see it, but the south western sea of dust just seems easier and more likely to me.

Hey, good discussion. I have a few more to add, but with no opinion of my own. I've never really thought about 'em.

Any inspiration to share on the following?

What you guys thing about the placement of Dungeonland, Palace of the Silver Princess, and Land beyone the Magic Mirror? The freebie general mods off the WoTC site?

Dungeonland/land beyond the magic mirror are supposadly reached via a portal in the dungeons beneath castle greyhawk.

as for Palace of the Silver Princess...when I ran it in Greyhawk I set it in the Lortmils, north of the Duchy of Ulek.
