That's how big my digital gaming folder is...

I spent my entire weekend downloading every single free module, map, article, program, netbook, etc etc.. that I could find from a variety of probably nearly 1000 websites and it is all Greyhawk related in 1 form or another.

Yesterday, I spent the entire day organizing every single file by country, if at all possible, and I must say... there is a brick crap ton of Greyhawk material available on the net. However, some countries have nearly 0 content dedicated to them, ie; Rovers of the Barrens, Hold of the Stone Fist, See of Medegia, Sunndi, etc..

Dare I say, If one was indifferent to the setting's canon vs. fanbased material, one would find a vast and wealthy library of Greyhawk specific knowledge, and a campaign setting nearly fleshed out. As I most certainly just have done, myself.

A brief perusal of my many new found materials have led me to just 1 problem....

The timeline!

I'd say between my digital and paper gaming libraries combined, a grouping of no more than 10% or so of any of the combined material could fit within the same decade on the CY Timeline.

So, once you choose a specific period (on the timeline) for your campaign, you are restricted to perhaps 10% of your entire library, just to keep a setting going where all stories and events are releveant to the current period in time in which you set your campaign.

After thinking on a solution and coming up with no such thing, I had found myself realizing that all along the timeline was the problem with Greyhawk's fanbase being at odds and being broke into so many different factions.

You can even break it down off the timeline...

1. the pre-FTA fanbase

2. The Carl Sargeant fanbase

3. Monte Cook / Erik Mona fanbase

4. Misc fanbase
(people that incorporated planescape, spelljamming etc..)

The above is a generalization and could really be strung out, but I don't want to concentrate too much effort into it at this time. It's really irrelevant anyway. Just needed draw brief attention to it in order to support my point.

It' no wonder we aren't getting any official support for our beloved setting. I'm sure everyone realizes we, as a buying community, can't agree on what *should* be released as official and who our fickle opinions think should head such an endeavor (if anybody.)

This is where it gets tricky, my brain goes 100 mph sometimes and I have a hard time communicating myself properly (specially through text), so hopefully you intellectuals will understand where I'm trying to go with this... (I'll do my best)

Is there any possible way to mesh everything together into 1 specific decade on the timeline?

If you can relax your canonized thought process as well as you prejudices vs. specific authors and events, and believe me... mine are very ignorant, then the answer is YES!

Well, there you have it... I now have enough content to flesh out an entire setting with a minimal (by DM standards) time ivestment, perhaps 3 months or so.

Where would the PCs like to go? The sky is the limit...

Wish me happy campaigning.

EDIT: I thought I should come back to briefly say that I'm officially finished with worrying and cherishing Greyhawk as it once was to me. I'm holding Greyhawk in my mind without any regard to it's timeline and series of events as they used to be. It's my Greyhawk now, and I will do with it as I may.

But, in light of my current and permanent standing on Greyhawk, I must take this oppurtunity, as this forum is my only outlet for communication to Greyhawk as it was once known to me, to say THANK YOU to all the various contributors, both little and small, old and young, first and last, for laying the groundwork and providing me with a foundation on which to build and enjoy countless adventures with my peers as we sit around my gaming table in the den.
