In the new Dragonlance books, minotaurs and other races available to PCs have Natural Armor ratings. One of my players interested in playing a minotaur barbarian has a question I couldn't easily answer, though; does their natural armor stack with that granted by spells or magical items such as an Amulter of Natural Armor +4?

Thanks in advance for you opinions.

Check the kind of bonus it applies. Are they both natural armor bonuses? In the case of an amulet of natural armor and a minotaur's natural armor, they're the same type, so they do not stack. The highest bonus applies.

A minotaur's natural armor bonus to AC stacks with armor worn (which is an armor bonus), mage armor (which is also an armor bonus), a ring of protection (which confers a defensive bonus), etc.

Cheers,
Cam

Actually... "natural" Natural Armor and "enchancment" Natural Armor stack.

So Barkskin and Amulets of Natural Armor as well as most other magical sources of Natural Armor are "enchancment bonuses to Natural Armor" so they stack with stack with ... natural Natural Armor. It's the same as an "Armor bonus" to AC and an enhancment bonus to the armor bonus armor provides.

Lets see if I can find some quotes from the SRD...

Under the spell Barkskin:
"The enhancement bonus provided by barkskin stacks with the target’s natural armor bonus, but not with other enhancement
bonuses to natural armor."

And then Amulet of Natural Armor just says the bonus is an enhancment bonus to natural armor.

Yes, a natural bonus amulet does stack with natural armor. Thats why they went with a +4 nowadays rather than just saying AC6 like they use to.

But two rings of natural armor dont stack you just get the higher of the two.

Hope this helps as natural armor is a huge plus for a Minotaur.

Thats right,
in 3.0 rules a amulet of naturel armor (or barkskin) does not stack with "racial" natuel armor. But in 3.5 they do.
Personally I use the 3.0 system (all the way), but it is yours choice.
