Cool, I like the idea of a Champion, thought long dead, returning and attacking the Sorcerer-Monarchs. However, targetting Hamanu might really reduce his lifespan, unless of course, Silencer also harms Hamanu...

Don't worry, he'll figure that out, the hard way...

Hammanu is a wimp.

He's not an original champion (although that has certain benifits...) and he isn't the most powerful SK around (Dregoth, Nibenay are more powerful according to cannon material)

He couldn't even take out Tyr, 15,000 people + 1 1st level dragon (Kalak) even with the "iron" advantage, that makes him a wuss.

He plays tought, but is mentally crippled by his past - that's why he hated kalak so much, reminded him of himself too much.

According to the Canon material, Hamanu is the Champion that was designed to be quite different from the other Champions (he initiated the Rebellion when he found out he was to kill the Human race, plus turn on his fellow Champions if/when they get in his way). He is a "wimp" because he fears what he is becoming, restricts himself as much as he can, and tries to keep his mind on Urik, rather than outside cities. Hamanu lives a life in total fear of what he has become, what he is supposed to do, and what could happen if he goes insane like Borys did through the metamorphosis.

Yes, he's a replacement, but Rajaat has some....interesting plans for his destiny.

I'd agree with most of that - i'd go as far as saying that most SK's made the mistake of presuming they would go insane if they become fully-fledged dragons, hence holding themselves back, unfortunatley, it (the insanity which gripped Borys) was probably a result of his transformation happening so rapidly, i mean, Dregoth stayed sane.

Also a neat way of explaining how Oronis managed to get back to a comparable level of avignon power, compared to his former dragon levels, so swiftly: working hard, doing lots.

You gotta wonder about enui and the SK's....

I'll agree - Oronis has been, compared to the other SM's, rather busy, even if he remains in the background and hidden. However, for 3,000 years.... in a D&D world..... not gaining even 10 levels seems like some people were sitting on their thumbs..... a lot. Even if those 10 levels were technically levels (depending on point of view) 21-30, or (as I see it, from the 2e perspective) 41-50.

Yeah, see any player would zooom up levels rapidly. I put it down to they spend too much time doing mundane admin stuff and things to stave off enui... i mean, once they become kings, maybe they spend the first 500 years taking 20 levels of Aristocrat (or Noble, from Dragonlance, cool class).

Even a nearly all-powerful creature still has to learn from mistakes and learn how to govern a city - look at the dude in Gladiator that kills his father, if he was a SK, he wouldn't have been killed by Russell Crowe, but gone onto learn how not to be such a dill-head.

Still, they are slow progressions. I allways put it down to the XP being the easy part, but the other parts being hard - finding people (Templars, Defilers etc) you trust enough to keep people away for 24 hours while you transform, staving off attempts by the veiled alliance to interrupt your ritual, pesky elemental lords and out-planar powers who re-neg on thier promise after you have completed all the tasks... any number of reasons why they transformed slowly - added to that, thier relcuctance to advance, for fear of insanity.

That's pretty damned good!

I enjoyed it.

As an aside, Hammanu also destroyed Yaramuke and Seimbla (? sp) along with it. You could add that to his list of "crimes."

Spelled: Hamanu
Spelled: Sielba

Hamanu rocks btw =) According to Lynn he was the last champion and didnt have the flaws the others had... he was for lack of a better word "Perfect" and he was obviously stronger than the others as he was chosen to be Human-Scorcher =)
Of course he is no match for Borys in his dragon form in a 1on1 battle. =)

I like Hamanu. He's in a unique position of apparently being able to finish his dragon metamorphosis anytime he wants to it would seem, although he never would (except when he did to take on rajaat at the end of the final book). As for the dragon madness, Dregoth has been the only one to undergo the transformations and not give in to the rage. Chalk it up to superior willpower and drive or something. All dragons are susceptible to dragon rage in stages 5-9. Dregoth is just unique in that one particular aspect. As for Hamanu, he killed both Sielba and Dregoth. Something to note here, is that Yarmuke was blasted to nothingness with huge scary magic. Dregoth was beaten to death by Hamanu and the Scorcher. Let's say Hamanu finds out about Sielba's scheme, gets royally PO'd, descends on her and her city like a fury, unleashes crazy insane amounts of dragon magic in a storm more powerful and dangerous than would seem possible for such a "weak" sorcerer-king, and when all is said and done and the dust clears Hamanu gets a good look at the effects of what he did. Such a huge expenditure of magic resulted in way too much progression along his transformation than he liked, and thus he went back into stingy hamanu mode, conserving magic in an attempt to not transform any more. Then he just uses physical prowess when they kill dregoth. of course i've pulled this all out of my . . . hat, and timeline info could starkly contradict it all. super distract-o nick runs off to take care of some real-life problems. arrrrh!

Hamanu didnt destroy Dregoth alone, it was Abalach-Re that gathered up all the SKs to take him out

hamanu was actually the one who managed to kill him though. in hand to hand combat no less. no other SMs ever managed to kill another of their kind, unless you count Kalak and Borys when it came to Kalid-Ma, but even then they had hamanu's help. And as for the prism pentad, all the SMs that got dropped were with the aid of rajaat or directly through his power, except kalak the anomaly.

Nice article Nyt! And it does make quite an interesting adventure hook for characters sponsored by an unknown power to find the Silencer...

However, and please don't take this the wrong way, but I thought Irikos could have talked in a bit more grander, ancient or even arrogant tones. Maybe its just because I use that a lot in my own writings... Just a quick example:

How long since I have fallen, Llyanus? From what I now see, I was successful none the less...

Fear not, Llyanus, for I bear no ill towards you, who has served me well, and for this I shall be grateful. Now tell me, what has transpired in my absence? What of the abominations? Has the land been cleansed? Has His vision been fullfilled?

KALAK?!? So... You had been wise to warn me of him then, Llyanus, and now I shall heed your words! What has come to pass, I cannot change, but though He has fallen, so shall He be avenged! Kalak the False I name him, and First amongst those who shall feel my wrath!!!

Perhaps I could post some of the things I wrote about Shei-Nad, a character I once played, of whom I wrote some parts of his story... I try to keep this kind of tone with him, as he is (was) a noble of Gulg, and so speaks their High Speech, after that fashion... Anyways, perhaps when I have more time to complete it a little...

Anyways, good article!

No offense taken, I know I'm still very green when it comes to that kind of writing.

Criticism only helps in this regards as far as I am concerned.

I like all of this. I might update it later with my own words, and once I get some more experience with it, but I want to move on at this point.

Post away, it only helps the community out. The more you post the more help you give.

Glad you liked it... Here's the rest, if it can help:

Manu... His name is not known to me. Borys of Ebe, however, I know all too well, and never did I think much of him. Foolish and ambitious he was, and never did he embrace His Word but in seeming, and now I see what foul ends he had plotted in the shadows... Curse him! Curse them all! If only He had heeded my warnings... Tell me of the fate which befell this traitor, and that of this... Manu?

So be it... Let Hamanu of Urik, traitor to our Lord, be the first to fall by my hand! And my sword... Llyanus, where is the Silencer? Surely, that which was made by the hand of Rajaat cannot have been destroyed by any magic these mortals could weild?

Hmm... Then I shall stay my vengeance until I claim the blade once more. Take me to where you now reside, and there you shall tell me all that came to pass since I last was, and you shall endeavor to find my prize. Once the Silencer is recovered, none shall stand against me, for I am Irikos, Left Hand of Rajaat, and I have returned!!!

Rajaat will have His vengeance, one false champion at a time...
