Can they ever recover from what has happened to them? I think Paladine has not served his children well, in making any deal with Takhisis before the Summer of Chaos. Why let his Dragons lose to Takhisis when all you have is her word when the last time she gave her word to protect the Good Dragon Eggs, look at what she did? Add to it the power gained by the Chromatic Dragons in the later ages, and I wonder what chance the Good Dragons have to avoid extinction in the future.|
The only possible 'balance' I can think of is if Raistlin balanced things when he killed so many Chromatic Dragons and their lairs when he attacked Takhisis in the Abyss during the TWINS trilogy, as the books make it so clear that Raistlin completely ravaged all of Takhisis dark legions in the Abyss itslef, which doubtlessly included Chromatic Dragons.

Yep, most of the casualties of the dragon purge were Chromatics, as were most of the perpetrators (except Iyesta?).
The 5th Age CS noted most metallics either retreated to the Dragon Isles, or disguised themselves as knights and lived among the Solamnics.
War of Souls took this further and had all gold and silver dragons removed from Krynn temporarily.
I'd say both metallics and chromatics have suffered casualties recently and have had a drop in numbers.
