Ok, i was thinking: what sports to athasians play and watch, apart from gladiators.

Ice hockey is out, too hot.

American football is out, to much protective equipment, get too hot in it, and only wuses play football with protective equipment. too stop start.

Lacrosse, ,maybe, if they can use the sticks as weapons....

Kank - Polo: use your imagination!

Aussie Football - fast, furious, lots of leaping, no protective gear. Maybe not enough blood...

Rubgy Leauge: Brutal, relativley fast, no protective equipment.

Rubgy: The game they play in heaven. Fast. Furious. Group tackles, half-giants as prop-head fowards... kicking, leaping, bloody.

My votes are for Lacrosse, Kank Polo and Rubgy.

Thoughts?

I'd vote for whatever game the mayans used to play; it's the one where they had a rubber ball and tried to get the ball through a ring high up on a wall...the losers were sacraficed...sounds right up Athas' alley...:D

Racing would most likely be one. Foot, horse or cart races were an important part of sporting events for many cultures of antiquity, and athasian cities are mostly based on those cultures.

Wrestling would certainly be another, as a discipline, not a bloodsport.

Other sports might depend on the culture of the city-state.

The Draji could certainly have that ball game described above. The hunt is certainly akin to a national sport in Gulg.

And of course, let us not forget Surfing, the national sport of Saragar.

I try very hard to forget about that.

I'd like to think that generally, Athasian sports would mix some aspects of standard olympic events with modern TV gladiator style shows, and toss in some old fashion strong man competitions (log tossing being replaced by gaj tossing), except with a much higher death toll.

Anybody see that old movie "Rollerball" (with James Caan?) It's a bit cyberpunky but if you repace the motorbikes with kanks or war crodlu or something, then you have the makings of a pretty cool game.

There's always the "jugger" thing from a few threads back.

Nobles might play wierd, decadent psionic games - some form of chess or the like where slaves' lives are at stake as the ante. Was there ever falconry on Athas? Might it have devolved into something else?

"Prowess" sports are probably common - archery, shot-putting and that sort of thing. They are low-cost with good spectator value.

There would have to be some sort of silt-skimmer sport for those living near the Sea of Silt - perhaps ruktoi-baiting/hunting or games of daring involving capturing live airborn razorwings from above the loess.

You could take a look at the games that were played by the "base cultures" upon which the cities of the Tablelands were based (greek, west african, aztec etc) and devise athasian versions of these.

Some post-cake idle thougts...

Read City-State of Draj. They do.

There's also that team game in Dragon's Crown. Sounds like fun.

The one that Hamanu makes the PCs play in the arena? I was thinking about that too - kinda like a DS Bloodbowl - heh heh.

Oh, and of course we mustn't forget the Annual All Tablelands Open Hawke's Gambit Tourney...
