#1tiornysFeb 27, 2004 16:47:14 | I worked out some Savage Species style progressions for the various Draconian sub-races. I thought some might find them interesting. Any comments or critiques are welcome. Draconian: All draconians have the following traits: dragon type, medium size (Sivak become large at 5th level), immune to disease, sleep and paralysis effects, Inspired by Dragons ability (see DLCS), lowlight vision, darkvision to 60', and low metabolism. #3NivedFeb 28, 2004 12:52:11 | I like it, I really like it. I have a player who has expressed an interest in playing a Draconian the next time we start a new DL campaign (I ended the last campaign when it got into fairly high levels and decided I'd start a new 1st level when I get KoD). But I didn't want them to be overly powerful. I was just thinking about "Why not monster levels," and bam here they are... thanks. You're one step ahead of me. |

#6tiornysMar 01, 2004 0:10:04 | Thank you for the compliments! After I take some time to double check that I got all of the abilities, and tweak the formatting, I will also post these to the Savage Species boards to get input from people with more experience than I have at this kind of thing. Any useful recommendations will be reflected here.Thought Baaz claws do 1d4 instead of 1d3? Baaz do get 1d4 on their claw attacks, both in my description and the DLCS. What you probably noticed is my listing their bite attack as 1d3. Baaz are listed in both the Races chapter (Ch. 1) and the Creatures chapter (Ch. 7). The first describes their bite attack as 1d4 (and their natural armor bonus as +2), while the second describes it as 1d3 (with their nat. armor bonus being +3). As I felt the Creature listing took precedence for raw combat statistics, I went with the latter. t~ |
#7fiendish_dire_weaselMar 02, 2004 1:20:59 | I recall someone (Cam?) saying that Draconians aren't supposed to get the stock dragon sensory abilities that are listed in the monster listing, just the low-light vision and darkvision. Anyone know about the bite damage or natural armor, if there has been an official idea which to use for Baaz? Back a bit more on topic, maybe do speed 20/40/60 on the Sivak's fly speed instead of 30/30/60? |
#8iltharanosMar 02, 2004 2:09:22 | Originally posted by Fiendish Dire Weasel The races chapter would take precedence over the monster listing, as it is far more detailed then the monster entry. It's akin to that rule that text takes precedence over table info. |
#9tiornysMar 05, 2004 2:43:11 | Originally posted by iltharanos The races chapter is far more detailed in general, but in terms of pure combat statistics the monster listing has better detail. That's part of why I went with the races chapter for Dragon qualities and the monster listing for the combat stats. I also felt that giving draconians blindsense, scent, and darkvision to 120' (instead of 60') was potentially overpowering. Furthermore, I don't recall reading anything in the novels that suggested to me that Draconians have blindsense. As far as the combat stats, I felt that it made flavor sense for Baaz to have more natural armor than Kapaks (grunt soldiers tend to be tougher than scouts), and I wasn't terribly concerned by the slight upgrade in power over the entry in the races chapter. t~ |
#10tiornysMar 05, 2004 3:34:20 | Originally posted by Fiendish Dire Weasel It's currently 30 (poor), 30 (average), 60 (average), as I felt the upgrade in maneuverability was worth its own step. It could easily be changed to 20 (poor), 40 (average), 60 (average). Was that what you had in mind? t~ |
#11fiendish_dire_weaselMar 05, 2004 4:13:38 | 20(clumsy)/40(poor)/60(average) would probably be good I think. In my experience fly speed is more of a concern for DMs out of combat than in, so even 20(clumsy) is a pretty handy ability, even if you don't want to use it in combat. |
#12tiornysMar 05, 2004 16:23:18 | Apparently, my memory and readings skills were suffering last night, as Sivak top out at 60 (poor), not 60 (average). Still, I liked the idea enough to change it. I haven't decided whether I want to use 40 (clumsy) or 40 (poor) as the second stage, so for now it's 40 (poor). t~ |
