How does the monetary system work in Dragonlance ? I remember reading how steel is worth more than gold(Due to the gold being too soft or something like that and iron being needed for weapons.).

In regular DnD it is : 10 copper = 1 silver, 10 silver = 1 gold, 10 gold = 1 platinum. How does it go in Dragonlance ? The rules they have for currency is confusing in the DLCS.

Okay...this is from memory...but I think it's right.

1 stl = 5 ip/bp = 10 sp = 50 gp = 100 cp

And I can't remember the pp conversion...I think it was 5 stl for 1 pp.

Don't know if you're American or not but...if you are, an easy way to remember is steel is like a dollar, silver is like a dime, gold is a nickle, and copper is a penny. And the iron/bronze pieces are kind of the odd guys out...but basically they'd be worth 20 cents.

Shoot now I have a question. Using the Player's Handbook what relates to what I mean the PHB uses Gold, silver, and copper(Like ohgodno wrote.). This seems to be really screwed up so how do you buy the stuff out of the Player's Handbook ?

Well...since gold, silver, copper work like the dollar, dime, an penny (respectively)....and in the DLCS the steel, silver, and copper work like the dollar, dime, and penny (respectively), then it follows that:

DLCS steel piece = PHB gold piece

DLCS silver piece = PHB silver piece

DLCS copper piece = PHB copper piece

DLCS bronze/iron piece = 20 PHB copper pieces = 2 PHB silver pieces

DLCS gold piece = 5 PHB copper pieces

DLCS platinum piece = 5 PHB gold pieces

It's really pretty easy. (unless I have the wrong conversions...and then it might get messy...but I think it's right...and no one has corrected me yet...which is a good sign) heh heh

Isn't one DLCS silver piece = 1/2 PHB silver piece? As in two Krynnish silver pieces are worth one PHB silver piece?
Or is my memory playing tricks on me?

A minor detail I've wondered about; some material components for spells in the PHB consist of a certain amount of gold, determined by value. How does that translate?

Using an amount of gold using it's steel value would greatly increase your need for gold for such a spell, whereas using the simple gold value reduces the spell's cost. Which might officially 'unbalance' the spell.

well, I play in a Dragonlance game and this is how my fellow players as well as the DM treat the whole steel piece thing:

It's purely for flavor -- all other ramifications are ignored.

Somehow, real gold and all that other stuff still exist, but only for decorative purposes -- if a spell needs gold, steel is substituted instead.

Why do we do this? Because if you thought about it, 50 steel coins = 1 pound in weight right? Well, a heavy steel shield weighs in at 15 lbs...a greatsword weighs 8lbs...there's a spell called wall of iron...

It'd create too much of a headache accomodating everything to the steel piece, so we make the steel piece accomadate everything...which means it does nothing
