When I bought the old Greyhawk boxed set many years ago there was a large, beautiful, colour, folding map inside. Is the same map included in the Living Greyhawk Gazette?

Nope, but Darlene Pekul, who did that map and a few other early D&D illustrations, may be doing some of the artwork, including the map, for Gygax's upcoming Castle Zagyg series.

ScottyG is right, but guess what? I recreated the thing for newer people and submitted it to Canonfire. Enjoy!

Thanks. It'd be nice to have that lovely foldout map though. Maybe I can get my parents to go through my old things and see if they can find it.

Say, how is that old Greyhawk box? I've been looking for an old version of Greyhawk just for the fluff (I can make up my own stats and rules), and if it's truly fluff worthy than I'll get it...If not then I'll settle for the AD&D 2E book.

I bought it sometime in the mid to late eighties so it's almost twenty years old now. If I recall correctly, there weren't many things you would have to convert because mostly it was descriptions of nations and gods. I think there were also things like a weather generator, random encounter tables and so on.

I am currently working on a reproduction of the '83 boxed set map of the Flanaess with the Campaign Cartographer software. It will include, and be true to, the original hex coordinate system. It will also include every city, town, river and geographical feature of the original, plus a bit more. The only major changes will be the addition of a lot of coastal barrier islands and the correction of a few errors in the otherwise excellent original map ( I refuse to draw a map that shows a river crossing over the top of a mountain range). It will be large, in color, and I will be more than willing to share it when it is complete. I want to provide it at a high enough resolution so that, with the file on CD Rom, any decent print shop will be able to print (and laminate) the full sized map, which will be close to 3 feet by 5 feet.

You can also download the '83 boxed set from svgames.com for about 5 US dollars. It includes the map, but it is divided up across multiple pages of the pdf. A little Photoshop work can help you piece it together. It does have some gaps, however, which is why I'm working on a new one. The text information in the set is excellent for anyone who wants to run a Greyhawk campaign, regardless of edition (especially if you want to run a classics campaign that begins prior to (576CY) the Greyhawk Wars.

The Darlene map first appeared (larger and glossier than the 1983 release) with the 1980 folio.

I took a look at the new Gazetteer map. It's not nearly as large as the Darlene map. It also uses a new fangled coordinate system which would be useless if you were trying to locate positions referenced in 1st and 2nd edition products.

It occured to me that, in addition to the '80 folio and the '83 boxed set, the Darlene map can also be found in the "From the Ashes" boxed set. It is slightly altered to show new political boundries in the aftermath of the Wars.

IIRC, the FtA Darlene maps also add new cities/towns there were not present on the original maps, as well.
