Graz'zt's divine ascension

I am developing an idea for a campaign but I need some suggestions.
The whole campaign is based on a large group of cultists of the Demon Lord Graz'zt who are trying to have their master ascended to divinity.

The starting setting is the Prime world of Toril.
There the cultists'll conjure a large number of tanar'ri which will destroy an important temple of Mask, the Deity of shadows and thieves of that world.
The temple was built in a rich underground city and the Maskarrans previously controlled the traffics between the surface and the inhabitants of the Underdark.
With the fall of the temple, the cultists will become the new rulers of the city, killing everybody who will refuse to recognize Graz'zt's power.
This is the first step.

For the next step, the followers of the Demon Lord will travel to the Demiplane of Shadow.
There they will obtain a very ancient artifact with a vast power over the shadows.

Then their aims will be to travel to the Abyss and give the artifact to Graz'zt.

If the plan succeed,in the immediate future Graz'zt will have strong basis to become a demigod of shadows stealing part of his portfolio to Mask.

What do you think of my idea?

I have some questions and I'd be glad if you give me your opinions:
1) Would Mask send an avatar to stop the attack to his temple?
2) Is it enough to have one or two temples in your name in order to ascend to divinity?
3) What kind of artifact can give the control over shadows needed by Graz'zt? Or are there places in the Demiplane of Shadows suitable to obtain such power?
4) Even the Faerunian Goddess of Night, Shar, nurses a cold anger for Mask's dominion over shadows but, ironically, she is now watching him (as stated in Faiths & Pantheons). Would she have a role in this struggle for domination over a part of the portfolio of Mask?
Would she help the Maskarrans in the underground city or send her minions to undermine the plans of Graz'zt followers?
Or would she simply sit down and wait for the best moment to steal the portfolio from one of the two challengers?
5) I know Graz'zt kidnapped Waukeen of Toril during the Time of Trouble and his son Iuz is a demigod of Oerth.
Is someone able to tell me if there are other relationships of Graz'zt with Powers?

The only problem I see is that their are already too many powerful churches in FR for demon cults to really rise up. Graz'zt is a heavy hitter on the Planes, but Toril is a pretty rough neighborhood for godlings... Orcus is a god in the Realms, but only way up in Damara (a backwater on the Prime if I've ever seen one).

I'm pretty sure you'd need a sizable following on Toril and have to get Ao's OK to worm into the pantheon. Just usurping a few temples wouldn't cut it.

if Demogorgon and Gargauth were allowed by Ao to be worshipped in the Realms, I think even Graz'zt can obtain his permission under the right circustances.

I don't think you even need temples. Finder rose to divinity without anyone actually worshipping him. Of course he also slew Moander and took his portfolio.

[giggling]I just thought about gods actually carrying around a folder that has a representative sample of their divine works in it.[/giggling]
