I'm reading some novels and wanting to start playing D&D, but I don't know what I need to play the DL campaign setting. Are the core rulebooks for D&D necessary?? What else is needed to run a fun game? I have about two other friends that are wanting to play, maybe even more. Are there any current edition starter sets available?? Thanks

Well what you NEED is friends to play with, with one willing to DM, though since your taking this innitiative I'll assume you've taken on that mantle.

As for the 3.5 Core Rulebooks (or 3rd edition its not to hard to play with those either), it would be advisable to have them, That's the Players Handbook, the Dungeon Masters Guide, and The Monster Manual.

These can be expensive, and if you don't have the cash then use the SRD the System Resource Document which is free from Wizards of the Coast. This contains all the information you need to play, and covers the bare bones information of D&D from the core rulebooks, but a lot of the flavor and descritive text (for monsters for instance) is missing, but all the rules are there. It has all the classes, races, monsters, spells and so on you'll need.

That's ok, because a lot of that descriptive text, like for the races is different in Dragonlance anyway. And that's why you'll need the Dragonlance Campaign Setting source book.

You're going to also need Dice. A four sided, a six sided, an eight sided, a ten sided, a twelve sided, and a 20 sided minimum. Most hobby shops sell sets that will have all you need together.

Lastly pencils and character sheets.

*EDIT* Oh I almost forgot, good luck! I hope everything works out for you.

I need the DL:AoM book, as you told me, but anything else to start playing DL, yes btw I will be DM most likely, do I need a DM screen as well?? I just need the basic stuff to start playing DL Campaigns

Well Dragonlance is a Campaign setting for Dungeons and Dragons, using the Dungeons and Dragons rules. The Dragonlance Campaign setting often refers to the core rules, and 90% of the class information and spells to be used in a Dragonlance game are in the Players Handbook.

But do you need to buy them? No, all those classes and spells are in the System Referance Document click the link and it'll take you to it. D&D operates now under the open gaming license so the Core Rules are free. Though as I said a lot of descriptive text is skimped on, but all the rules you need are there in the SRD.

Now you don't need the 'Age of Mortals: Dragonlance Campaign Setting Companion' book per-say, not to say its not a great resource, I love it, I have mine sitting here beside me. Great source of information, but the Dragonlance Campaign Setting book proper is more important.

As for the screen, well that's up to you. I've known DMs that like to roll out in the open so everyone can see their rolls, I know DMs (Like me) who prefer a screen. They're handy to have, but not technically required, if I forgot my screens (yes that's plural) when I went to game I might be annoyed but it wouldn't stop me from running a game.

Also, May I suggest that if your local hobby store has a Game (Any D&D game) running, just go observe them for one session. It will help tremendosly.

The big thing about being a DM, especily a first time DM, is not to worry about the ruelks to much. They're nessicary for play, but really your there to have fun.

If you have the Money you should buy a Players Handbook and, If you Can a Dungeon masters Guide(Refering only to you as the DM). There is a ton of usefull information, tips on DMing, and other such things in the book, and you'll find it to be an invaluble resource to you. It has sample Magic items, Classes, and other stuff like that.

Please, please, PLEASE! remeber that your first start is always rocky, and you will probably find it to be a bit difficult at first. Don't give up, keep playing and i assure you that you will have found a relaxing anf enjoyable hobby to do with your friends till your golden years.
