OD&D skill system

I dont play OD&D anymore, but here is an idea I just thought of.

This system uses d20+skill bonus>DC mechanic as in the D20 system. Basically, the player has to toll a D20 and add his skill level to the number rolled. If this is equal to or higher than the Difficulty Class (DC) decided by the DM (Typically 15 or 20), the PC succeeds. If lower, it fails.

Here is the new stuff:
The PC gets as many skill points as in the regular OD&D system. If the character is unskilled (ie, doesnt have the skill), he may still add his positive ability modifier to the roll.

If he adds 1 skill point to the skill, he becomes skilled. This allows the player to add 1/2 his level to the die roll in addition to his positive ability score modifier.

If he adds 2 skill points, he becomes a master, and may add his level plus his positive ability score modifier to the roll.

With some tweaking, thief and other class abilities may also be adapted to this system, but that would take some more work and play testing.

What do you think?

That's a cool idea. Similiar to what I had done. Better actually. I had just given a bonus of one to thier role per level of skill. I like yours better though.

I thought of having more levels, say level/4, level/2, level, levelx2 for instance, but I figured two (3 counting unskilled) would be enough. As I see it, the lack of a decent skill systems is one of the major flaws in OD&D. I would never consider going back to a system without a decent skill system now. Ofcourse, back in those days, it was a whole different story...
