How do you handle "Dragon Magic?"

Of course, I can't ask a question like that without posting my own view. I always handled this as the SK in question (or any advanced being capable of using "Dragon Magic"), as long as they had an obsidian orb to focus through, could perform a number of limited wishes up to their level. For example, Hamanu was listed as a 23rd level dragon, I believe, so he would be able to use 3 limited wishes, for free, a day.

Of course, the focus of this limited wish is, well, limited, but face it: not many PCs have the patience to play a character all the way up to 20 levels in psion and wizard, and then go through all the stuff they need to go through to become an advanced being. Short version? It's the GM's call whether a Dragon Magic "spell" counts or not. If not, they lose that wish.

Is this unbalanced? Yes. Is this unfair? Yes. Does this make the SKs considerably nastier? Yes. I use common sense when determining what an SK is capable of, but this gives them an edge above and beyond their physical stats, spells, or abilities. Notably, I don't allow time travel, so if the PCs surprise a dragon, it can't simply hop back in time a few minutes so it won't be surprised, and so on.

What the "obsidian orbs" are and are not capable of has always been one of those things that the game designers completely ignored from the pentad. It was a brilliant idea, though, and I've tried to incorporate it in the game.

What do you guys do for dragon magic?

I'd explain, but it's on my website. Which, unfortunately will be going down in a couple days until I can get things set back up again in California.

Ha! My PC's have never made it close enough to a SK to see how Dragon Magic works. If they did, I'd probably treat it as some kind of epic spell/psionic hybrid. Probably just use the obsidian orbs to focus the PP and spell energy together to form the spell. However, it now looks as though a lot of the 10th level spells from 2nd edition Dark Sun seem about equivalent to 9th level spells in 3.5e. Did D&D get that much more powerful? Yowzas!
