Question: I have recently ordered the Dark Sun box set (the first one, not the revised one with the tan background) and Mind Lords of the Last Sea. What else would you recommend that I order? Which books are most crucial? Which books should be shunned by all save the collector?

Thank you very much for your help !

p.s. I am an almost total dark sun newb. My only exposure was looking over a friend's revised box set 5 or 6 years ago.

EVERYTHING!!!!!!

Seriously.

If you want to be a real Dark Sun collector, then go for everything,

If you want just the basics then you made the right choice in getting the first DS box set. I would also get City by the Silt Sea, Dune Trader, Elves of Athas, Earth, Air, Fire & Water, Ivory Triangle boxed set, City State of Tyr and that should pretty much cover it. Though I feel like I am leaving something else out.

Was it Dragon Kings? That's been recommended to me....but I'm not sure how useful it would be right off the bat, since it's for high level characters, right?

To what Nyt said, I would add "The veiled alliance" to the collection. It as many informations on all the cities.

Unless you have a special interest in Mind lords of the Last Sea, this book is a bit dissapointing... you see, surfing druid and cute dolphin isnt very athasian ;)

Mind Lords of the Last Sea has Surfing Druids and Sentient Dolphins. These are generally not liked by the community (me included). However, there are many other, useful and cool ideas that comes from that book, if you can just overlook the real bad parts.

Pick up the first box set. Read through it and see if you like it. If you do, then start picking up the other accessories and adventures. All told though, you can get the entire line of DS material for less than $175 total if you go by way of downloading the PDFs.

If you like the first box set enough, try and stick with collecting the first set of sourcebooks before getting the revised box set and its later supplements. Many people didn't care for some of the changes that occured whith the revised DS box set (I liked it, but may very well be in the minority).

Lasty, Mind Lords is a decent book (great adventure in it actually), but the flaws stand out so much that they're a little hard to ignore and get to the good stuff which is mainly getting a glimpse of a region of Athas that has remained reletively unchanged since before the Clensing Wars.

After the Box set, Dragon Kings would be my very first choice. If you're running a 2E game, also pick up "The Will and the Way" for a much better psionic system and lots of new psionic abilities.
