Step 1) Buy the 3.5 PHB, DMG, and MM if you don't already have them.
Step 2) Buy the Dragonlance Campaign Setting
Step 3) Buy the Age of Mortals book
Step 4) Read DLCS and AoM cover to cover. Twice.
Step 5)
Step 6) Profit

Beyond those simple steps, read the following books:

-Dragons of Autumn Twilight
-Dragons of Winter Night
-Dragons of Spring Dawning

-The three Legends books (can't remember the specific names, but all contain "Twins" in the title)

-Second Generation
-Dragons of Summer Flame

-War of Souls Trilogy (again, can't remember specific titles all are "Dragons of..." books with star, moon, and sun references)

That's if you want a very in depth, awesome Dragonlance game. Of course, this isn't all required, just a really good idea.

The short list?

Step 1) PHB, DMG, MM, DLCS, AoM. Buy them.
Step 2) Read the PHB pages 1-180.
Step 3) Read the Adventuring and Campaigns sections of the DMG.
Step 4) Read the DLCS cover to cover.
Step 5) Read AoM cover to cover.
Step 6) Find players.
Step 7) Start planning the adventures.
Step 8)
Step 9) Profit

Ah, War of Chaos setting.

There's a sidebar in the DLCS about failing magic during the Chaos war and leeching magic items post-Chaos war.

[tangental sidebar type dealy]
My only caution for the AoM book is to watch out for the artwork. It's a mixed bag at best. Some is REALLY good (Academy Sorcerer, Legion of Steel members, etc.) While some is REALLY bad (Solamnic Auxilliary Mage, Rogue Knight, Citadel Mystic, etc.).

On a related note, I nominate whomever drew the Academy Sorcerer to draw everything for Dragonlance from here to eternity. Seriously, that person has talent.

Yep. Jason Engle's work is quite spectacular. I don't know that I'd want to see him do *all* the artwork however.

I'd like to see Engle, Matt Stawicki, and Ron Spencer get the lion's share of the work, with an occassional piece by Todd Lockwood or Wayne Reynolds. Oh yeah, that Elmore guy too.

Irrelavant as it may seem now, the Legends Trilogy books were:\

Time of the Twins
War of the Twins
Test of the Twins

Now granted, the more books you read, the more insight you can give to your campaigns. Of course, it can also give you too much to think about at one time :P

All you need is the DLCS and a good working knowledge of that era as well as the know how to create the prestige classes and whatnot that may crop up. While the DLCS is weak in the Geography department (sad considering the huge font and borders and the amount of material they had to draw from), it does provide enough information that a good DM can wing it.

I read all the suggested novels years ago but can not remember much now. I guess I will go reread them. if only I could remember...

On a second note, i third the vote for more art by Jason Engle. But variation is always good too.
