Hey!

I'm not initiated into the Dark Sun supporters league. I've never read the setting, books etc.

But!

Something in the title of this forum caught my eye. It says Dark Sun's a place where magic harms the environment. That's an interesting idea, I like it.

Anyone care to do a 30 second elaboration for the newbie?

:D

Thanks and peace,

There are two paths of arcane magic in the Dark Sun setting: the Path Dexter and the Path Sinister. According to The Wanderer's Chronicle both paths draw energy from the physical environment to power spells, they just do so in different ways.

Preservers, followers of the Path Dexter, take energy from plants without harming the earth itself. The earth a Preserver takes energy from recovers in time and renews itself.

Defilers, followers of the Path Sinister, steal energy from the earth without any regard for the damage they do. The earth a Defiler uses to power a spell is destroyed for good. Plants wither and die, soil turns to ash, and water becomes dust. More powerful Defilers, such as the god-like sorcerer-kings of Athas' city-states can steal life energy from animals and people to empower their spells.
