I play a evoker in my campaign setting, and I am a constant frustration to my DM because I think of almost insane uses of spells in order to defeat monsters. At the end of our last encounter I dimension door'd directly in front of a vampire lord with two layers (The most powerful two, the colors escape me) of a prismatic sphere that I applied through the use of a wand of conjuration. The DM hastily said the Vamp made his magic resistance and then proceeded to ignore the paragraph, even after I pointed it out, that the vamp's equipment should have been destroyed seeing how it was less than artificat/relic quality. That sort of thing isn't uncommon in my gaming group, so I let it go. The final straw was after I cast a contigency on myself that after I cast the third level fireball spell that I would immediately erect an Otiluke's resilient sphere around the target of the fireball. I used this contingency following the release of two delayed blast fireballs at said vamp (He has a ton of HP). Anyhow, he was trapped inside the sphere and all three fireballs went off at once. I believed that if that didn't just flat out incinerate him (An explosion of magical fire constrained to roughly 1/10th of its normal blast radius.) he should take extra damage, but again I was shot down. So what I was wondering what your opinions were on not only these situations but creative spellcasting altogether. Should this type of gaming be rewarded (i.e. more damage, etc)? The thing is, it makes playing a spellcaster boring when no matter what flair or strategem you apply to your spell you gain no benefit over simply stating "I shoot the lightning bolt." -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : SamualT Barronsword Date : 08-24-07 06:23 PM Thread Title : Re: Questions about 2e creative spellcasting and their effects. Are you playing 2nd Edition. If so what you describe are not allowable actions under the core rules. Prismatic sphere's, even those cast by wands, are stationary. They are centered on the caster when the caster cast the spell, but they do not move with the caster. The caster can still move, entering and leaving the sphere without harm to himself, but he can not "take" the sphere with him when he moves. When you used "dimension door", you would have arrived in front of the vampire lord without your two sphere layers, they would have still been back where you were standing when you used the wand. Also, Contingency spells "must be one that affects the wizards person". The examples they give in rules are feather fall, levitation etc. Otilukes Resiliant Sphere would only work if you had yourself as the target of the sphere after firing off your third level fireball. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:23 AM.
