I was just kicking around Dragonlance.com and saw the cover to Key of Destiny. Nice. What I'm wondering though, is that a dragonspawn on the cover or what? It looks suspicously like a half-dragon.

Yep, she's a red dragonspawn.

Thanks for the quick response. Hmm, from their description and art in the SAGA rules I always thought they'd be more hideous and malformed. I mean, the one on the cover isn't pretty, but she's hardly a 'shambling mound of flesh' or something like that.

Well....I dont remember ever having heard that dragonspawn were "shambling mounds of flesh"

Ive always seen them described as uber toughies.

I really like Jeff Easley's depiction of the dragonspawn, as she looks to be a humanoid altered to be draconic--similar but opposite to a draconian, a dragon altered to be humanlike. She looks quite menacing.

By the way, you'll see the final version of the has a surprise!

"Oh, it is a terrible sight to see, these shamblling mounds of flesh, not quite draconic, but defintely not human." Pg. 177 of the SAGA bestiary. Thle art on the page is pretty ugly. However, I like the new version better, can't wait to see what the character is all about.

P.S.
I don't think being a 'shambling mound' means you can't also be an 'uber toughie';) .

P.P.S.
What happens to a dragonspawn when their dragon master is slain. I would think they would remain the same, but get their free will back. What do you guys think?

Considering that's a Red Dragonspawn on the cover and Maylx is dead I think we're going to find out the answer.

I think they probably get their free will back but the transformation effected more than their body, the psychological trauma is going to keep just about every one from going back to the 'way they were.'

That has got to be my favorite pic of a dragonspawn ever. She looks a bit like a devil or demon, but that’s okay in my book. I think that gives her some flair.

Previously, I had looked at dragonspawn as “bad draconian ripoffs”. Andre’ and Tobin have talked to me quite a bit about dragonspawn, which opened my eyes to their potential. The pic sort of sealed the deal.

I think, if I were to run a DL game right now, I’d use dragonspawn as agents for the dragon overlords, and preferably an intelligent agent. I just didn’t get into the dragonspawn as presented in Dragons of a New Age.

Certainly, though, I would have them look like the Easley picture.

Woo-hoo! Who needs Cracker Jack? ;)

There's a sidebar in KEY OF DESTINY that deals with what happens to dragonspawn upon the death of an overlord. Not the happiest time in a dragonspawn's life, I can assure you!

Intresting...

Can any dragon create a spawn if they discover the method, or was that a unique power of the overlords?

All of this information is included in the Age of Mortals sourcebook, along with information on skull totems, new draconic feats, and more.

Who is the other female on the cover besides the red dragonspawn? A specter?

She's definitely a ghostly-type of some sort--but kind of sad. You might even say she's a spectre of sorrows...

I wonder if that means she's learned the price of courage....
