Lots of new faces around, great to see a community influx of this magnitude...

I, and others I'm sure, would like to know who you are...
So if you're interested, please tell us a little about you!

hm...

Well, I'm not exactly new... I read on the board since 2001, but I just recently decided to take a more active part in it...

I'm 21 years old, gaming since I was 7 (Das schwarze Auge, AD&D), having DMed for a few years, I have rertired from that job.
Though I can't keep from creating new worlds and campaign settings :D

Currently I'm really into Planescape, Dark Sun (always has been my favourite) and Oriental Adventures (especially Rokugan).

Otherwise I'm highly philosophical (I believe so ) and columnist on http://www.2002abi.de.tt (Site is german only, sorry, but if you understand german, I recommend reading the column highly).

As for my beliefs. Well I'm an atheist that as of late tries to bring the spirit of Bushido into his life. I hate the world for forcing one to become a liar and cheater, just to have moderate success and so I started to adopt the Bushido, just to show her ;)

Otherwise there's nothing special about me:
I'm physically unassuming, currently have no girlfriend, serve in the army and care for my petrified (didn't find a better word for unable to move, as I'm still having trouble writing in english) dog (a Dachshund if it interests anybody)...

Characters I like to play:
Tragic heroes or antiheroes, the magic wielding ones or just simply put samurai, barbarians and any "flavoured" fighter, except paladins (I don't like godly magic :D )

Actually, didn't see my name on that previous list, so I'll post here. I've been pretty heavily involved with the Dark Sun community for a while now and you might have noticed that I post a lot.

I graduated from college with a degree in Art and Psychology in '98 and soon to be mourning the passing of my 28th year. I've been playing Dark Sun since I picked it up by accident thinking it was a Forgotten Realms expansion back in '91.

As far as D&D goes, I've been playing since I was 6, so quick math (not my strong suit) adds up to 22 years of D&Ding; I'd say probably close to 20 of that spent as a GM.

I owe a lot to D&D as it really inspired my style of art - I try to give back to the community whenever I can, especially to Dark Sun. I'm currently working on redrawing all of the monsters for Dark Sun. They're located on my website, below.

Kaihne, probably looking for the word "paralyzed." I can't give you too much crap for it though, considering that, thanks to my german friends (I lived there 6 years in my youth) I've been calling the Drakes male ducks. Go fig: German humor.

Well I've been playing D&D (or ratehr AD&D) since 1986
Were these boards originally TSR? anyway I came by the boards years ago a few times but always found them bugged to hell and slow etc, so plain gave up on them until couple of months ago I found they worked! ;)

Better known on the Everquest forums (been playing that for years to), play Redorious the erudite archmage by the way *bows*.
Also hang around the Monte Cook forums and the D&D newsgroups.

"Retired" from society due to ill health (Chronic Fatigue sucks and isn't a figment of the imagination, pfft), family needs, and fed up with the bull crap, hehe. 35 live in Scotland.

Usually the DM in games (very rarley get to play as a PC), like Dark Sun, Spelljammer, Undermountain, 1st ed Forgotten realms and Ravenloft settings, but usually play my homebrew campaign.
I run NPCs as *characters* and love involving the surroundings and natural world as part of the events. As an example I based a scenario on a small river valley in RL, in game, goblins used thorn bushes for cover etc and you'd be amazed how much havoc you can do to a party merely playing the creatures utilizing their environment ;)

One of my hobbies is digital art, so I've done a fair bit of Spelljammer art, plus fantasy and even a couple of Dark Sun pics.
Also work with Campaign Cartographer to do maps of my games.
My website is www.silverblades-suitcase.com (linked in me sig pic)

I am new to these forums, but I have been gaming for 17 years. Started with the old colored box sets and progressed from there. I currently am not running any games, but am playing in four. I have run games from most of the major settings and crossing them on occasion. It is interesting to see a Half-Giant from Athas, wandering Fearun wearing Full Plate and using a Giant-sized Two-Handed sword.

I have been wandering the Wizards forums in various guises for a year or so. I am currently spending much time on the Dragonlance forums and am looking to get to know the folks here as well. A friend of mine may be preparing a Dark Sun Campaign, so I am getting back into the mindframe for such an event.

I look forward to getting to know you all more. If any of you are PC Gamers, check out the website in my signature. You will get a better Idea of what kind of games and such we play.

Interesting. I played that since the last beta of EQ, all the way up to aboout 1 1/2 years ago (or was it 2 years ago), shortly after PoP was released. My main character at the end was Oguler Denju, the Ogre Beastlord, and had designed the first Beastlord UI's for Everquest (which many people have either emulated, or extended from the original by now), made one for each of the 5 races that could be Beastlords, using Blender3D and the G.I.M.P. for graphics, and Vim for the XML. I also did up a spellbook many people used, even non-beastlords for a while, that looked like a tanned animal hide. I played on the Xegony server, and still occasionally post up on the beastlords.org forums. I stopped playing out of boredom and the lack of income necessary to keep paying the monthly fee. Now, I'm not even remotely interested in EQ, however am very interested in World of Warcraft instead.

anyways....

Ah you can make UI's? Man that's cool Some beautiful work out there, but I never used them ;) I figured that messing with UI's can = hassle *cough WIndows*, and found the basic one practical if not sexy, hehe.
Well after the start of POP, EQ went downhill, LDON wasn't bad, but too "samey" after a while, higher you go in PoP worse it gets, IMHO.

I made them - and my UI was basically the "standard" UI for Beastlords, as I theemed it according to race. I used a texture that was like grizzley bear hair for the Ogres, and had a couple shots of bears in the windows, alligators for trolls, wolves for barbarians, tigers for vah shir, and a sort of wierd lizard one for Iksar. the skin had round windows, and I made the inventory have a paper-doll view with members of each race (even gender) displayed on it, even the mouse cursor looked like an animated beastlord epic weapon, and of course my tanned animal-hide for the spellbook. It took me about 3 to 4 weeks to make it all, getting the graphics just ight, lining them up perfectly, getting the information correct, etc. I figure that when WoW is released, I'll probably try my hand at the UI's for that too. I still keep in touch with my friends I had in that game.

Well, I finally migrated over here from the DS mailing list. I've been involved there since...hrm, before it was on Wizards server. I recall that much. As there was too little happening there, too little discussion for far too long, I finally came here hoping for more.

I've contributed to a couple of the official DS web releases -- two entries in Villages of the Wastes; minor editing and artwork for Whispers of the Storm; I otherwise spend my free time writing and illustrating for a variety of independent RPGs.

I was part of a long-running DS game in high school, and I love the apocalyptic, shattered-environment setting. Enough that, a number of years ago, I developed a set of rules for playing DarkSun with the SAGA card-based system.

I've been playing RPGs for around two decades. I don't recall specifically when I first began, but I believe it might have been around '84 or earlier (anyone recall when the first Transformers comic came out?). Currently, I mostly play D&D in a homebrew setting; I would play more if I had a local group, or an on-line group that could play for more than a couple hours once a week.

Greetings all.

I've been lurking these boards sporadically for some time. might as well say hello and such.

I'm 25, married, been gaming for 5 years roughly, but reading rpg books for twice that. Bought some DS stuff from second edition and played through one of the DS computer games more times than I can remeber.

When WotC re-released Athas in the pages of their magazine's I was geeked. But it's not quite the same as I remember. And I know you would all say that is an understatement, but what I mean is . . . the Athas that you all talk about on the boards here is different from the 2nd Edition Athas I remember. Of course, I'm sure you guys know what you are talking about and anything different is my mind being faulty.

But I do have some questions. I know this is probably not the right thread to ask this . . . but if anyone can at least point me inthe right direction.

1.) I seem to somehow remember that there was a reference to one of the SK's switching their metamorphosis mid-stream fromn Dragon to Avingon(sp?) and working on correcting the error of their ways . . . the whole while keeping it secret from the other SK's.

2.) I seem to remember there being a city called Ur Draxa . . . I can't find it in the map in the issue of Dungeon. Did WotC just remove it during the 300 years?

3.) I don't remember anything about the death or repalcement of any SK aside from Kalak in Tyr. The fact that there is an undead king in Raam, a new one in Draj (though I do vaguely remember the Tectuktitlay, but I thought he was in power in the sources I read . . ), another that was sent into and returned from an extra-planar prison . . .

Dang . . those are the only questions I can think of off the top of my head right now.I'm sure there are more. Is there anywhere you guys can refer me to to catch up on the setting. I know there is Athas.org, but that deals mainly with the mechanics . . . I want to get the setting to make sense in my head before I start running it.

Yep. That's Keltis, Lizardmen Executioner, SK of Kurn. Became Oronis, the first avangion, and now also rules New-Kurn, an idyllic city-state in construction that tries to bring back an earlier, gentler age.

2.) I seem to remember there being a city called Ur Draxa . . . I can't find it in the map in the issue of Dungeon. Did WotC just remove it during the 300 years?

No, its the Dragon's city, in the middle of the Silt Sea. It was hiden from view by the Great Ash Storm. Rajaat's substance, when he was freed, had become linked to the elemental plane of water and, has his essence was put back into the Hollow, his substance became the Cerulean Storm. Now it rains on Ur-Draxa.
Lots of steam too (since the city is inside a ring of magma).

3.) I don't remember anything about the death or repalcement of any SK aside from Kalak in Tyr. The fact that there is an undead king in Raam, a new one in Draj (though I do vaguely remember the Tectuktitlay, but I thought he was in power in the sources I read . . ), another that was sent into and returned from an extra-planar prison . . .

The events in the Prism Pentad line of novels revealed the death of Kalak, Abalach-Re and Tectuktitlay, and the imprisonment of Andropinis in the Black. A young man was raised to power in Draj, Raam and Balic are in turmoil, Tyr is free.
In ruined Giustenal, the undead dragon-king Dregoth is planning to take over Raam with his army of dragon-like Drays.

Dang . . those are the only questions I can think of off the top of my head right now.I'm sure there are more. Is there anywhere you guys can refer me to to catch up on the setting. One way might be to get the Boxed Set and the later Revised Boxed Set in PDF format from www.svgames.com
5 bucks each download. The state of the world is pretty well described in both those boxes. Veilled Alliance is also crucial for the descriptions of this widespread organization. Elves of Athas and Thri-Kreen of Athas can be good too to put an athasian feel back into your ideas. ;)

Yes, his name is Oronis, formerly Keltis the Lizardman Executioner. He once was the Sorcerer-King to the city of Kurn, and still pretends to be so for the renamed city of Old Kurn, but in actuality is more of an informal advisor to New Kurn's government with no official position in that government. He switched to becoming a Preserver, and with the help of another Preserver, he invented the Avangion metamorphosis process. He's a very cautious individual, and has been ensuring that the other Sorcerer-Kings aren't aware of his existence as much as possible.

2.) I seem to remember there being a city called Ur Draxa . . . I can't find it in the map in the issue of Dungeon. Did WotC just remove it during the 300 years?

Ur Draxa was in the Valley of Dust and Fire, and was the home of The Dragon, Borys of Ebe, once known as the Butcher of Dwarves. However, events described in the book series known as the Prism Pentad (The Verdant Passage, The Crimson Legion, The Amber Enchantress, The Obsidian Oracle, and The Cerulean Storm) resulted in the destruction of Ur Draxa, and the formation of the Cerulean Storm that rages in the Sea of Silt, however the Dragon Magazine articles (of which are extremely inaccurate and generally not liked by many of the posters here, prefering the rule conversion presented by Athas.org instead) decided to just completely remove that part of the world all together. but there are many other preoblems with it, found in several long threads here on this very message forum, which I'd recommend looking for (they should be within the first 2 pages or so, the REAL long threads about the Dungeon and Dragon Magazine articles).

3.) I don't remember anything about the death or repalcement of any SK aside from Kalak in Tyr. The fact that there is an undead king in Raam, a new one in Draj (though I do vaguely remember the Tectuktitlay, but I thought he was in power in the sources I read . . ), another that was sent into and returned from an extra-planar prison . . .

In the Prism Pentad (usually referred to as the PP here), several of the Sorcerer-Kings were killed - Kalak of Tyr, Abalach-Re of Raam, Tectuctikulay of Draj, and even the Dragon Borys himself. Andropinis of Balic was also exiled/imprisoned into the plane known as "the Black" for 1,000 years by his former master, Rajaat (who was either directly or indirectly responsible for the deaths of all of the other SK's except Kalak). Dregoth is a formerly dead/undead king who's been in the city he made known as New Giustenal under the surface of the world, directly below the ruins of Giustenal, his former city. Other SK's that dies have been sielba of Yarmamuke, who Hamanu of Urik decided he got tired of, and Kalid-Ma of Kalidnay, who actually was potentially taken to ravenloft and is in a deep coma, thanks to the actions of his high templar.

Dang . . those are the only questions I can think of off the top of my head right now.I'm sure there are more. Is there anywhere you guys can refer me to to catch up on the setting. Here on these forums. Also, you can buy PDF versions of all of the Dark Sun gaming materials from SVGames, which can help. They also are occasionally sold on eBay, in the printed versions. I also highly suggest checking out Athas.org, which is the official site for Dark Sun, and has been doing an awesome conversion of the Dark Sun game system/rules to 3.5e D&D. there is also Grummore's Silt Skimmer Page, where he has a very up-to-date (and quite extensive) list of links to various Dark Sun sites on the web.

Welcome to the forum.

My name is Joe. At least, that is what I am told. And for all your gaming needs, I reside in Las Vegas!! (Now if Only I could find some Dark Sun machines in the local casino, hehehe)

Started gaming in '90ish. First game I played was Cyberpunk (2013) and I fell in love with it (Cyberpunk will always be my all time favorite game). From then, tried AD&D (mix of 1st and 2nd edition, generic worldless) and never really cared for it. From the beginning we made charts because the AC and ThAC0 system just bit. Played Rifts (Local Comic-guy who also supplied our gaming needs, because there was no Game store nearby - was misinformed and told us that Rifts was usable with Cyberpunk) Anyway, we played Rifts for a while and loved it. Then the whole SDC/MDC system revealed itself to be the useless peice of junk that it was (Armor that costs an entire fortune, yet it ABLATES!, worthless junk). That, and every single book released Weapons/Armor/Classes/Races/Powers etc that all had to be 100% better/more powerful than the previous. So when you had characters from Any of the variable World/Source/Conversion books, they totally outshone anything from the main book.

Played Robotech (Macross/MacrossII) and again, loved it for a while Again, same old flawed MDC/SDC system, but in a setting where the one really didn't meet the other.

Shadowrun, All of the other Palladium systems, Cyberpunk2020. Then my friend picks up Dark Sun. GROAN, it's AD&D. But so different. He started us out with the flip books, and it was cool!. Then after that, he started up other various games, and again, eventually the AD&D system started dragging down the game itself (Wait, do I need to roll High or low this time, Thac0 is 9, AC is -7... I rolled a... 14, did I hit? ) And then later Planescape came out, and again, I was in love with the world, willing to overlook the system in order to play the game, but eventually this too died. A Flawed set of mechanics is devestation to a great setting, in the same way that a flawed director can ruin even the most anticipated of movies.

In any case At the time of this writing, I am 27, been gaming for 14 years now, Came to marry a gamer who has been playing since she was 9 (Yay, whoever has had a spouse that just didn't understand why you wanted to get together and play Roleplaying games?), and 3.0 (and now 3.5) Has revived my faith in D&D, played in an awesome converted Dark Sun game (thanks Athas.org)

In any case, if you want to check out an original game setting with original mechanics, check out Kreation at
http://www.ig-games.com/ (There is a playtest set available for download)
the game and the website are Still a work in progress, but has original art from our resident artist, a working system, and a world/history that I had a hand in helping to create

You're thinking of the "Forestmaker" adventure, where Lalai-Puy was pretending to become an avangion through her typical deciet.

Ah . . . the Prism Pentad, are those the only "canon" novels? are there other novels?

Generally speaking, those are the big 5 for the novels. However, all of the novels (including the PP series) have at least one or two inconsistancies. Others include The Tribe of One series (The Outcast, The Seeker, The Nomad), and the Cronicles of Athas (]The Brazen Gambit[/u], The Darkness Before Dawn, The Broken Blade, Cinnabar Shadows, The Rise and Fall of a Dragon King, and I'm not certian if there's any more in that series), which while they are good books overall, and great for the Athasian feel, they have been (especially Rise & Fall, or RaFoaDK as it is referred to frequently here) the topics of many debates due to inconsistancies with other Dark Sun materials.

So Kalid-Ma is in Ravenloft AND on Athas in a coma? Or in RL in a coma?

Well, the official Dark Sun history had it that Kalid-Ma figured out how to achieve full Dragonhood, and was killed by the other Sorcerer-Kings, plus his city was destroyed as well out of fear of his animalistic rampaging.

However, in Ravenloft, they had the Island of Kalidnay appear - a desert city surrounded by a sea of silt. On this island rules the Darklord who was/is the high templar of Kalid-Ma (Thok-An, I believe), and Kalid-Ma himself is, in human form, in a coma under heavy protection from Thok-An, who pretty much sold her soul to the Dark Powers to help Kalid-Ma become a Dragon, and sacrificed her entire family, or something like that.

Some of us have (well, following Nytcrawlr's lead) chosen that the 5 orbs of Kalid-Ma are scattered not only on Athas, but also on Ravenloft, something like 3 are on Athas and 2 are in Ravenloft, hgowever if all 5 are brought together, Kalid-Ma could be re-awoken, and possibly as a fullly metamorphosized Dragon.

Thank you for the Welcoming.

No problem. (See Mach, occasionally, I can be civil! Must be the vicodin...)

My name is Richard, I'm 19. I have been into D&D since 1995, when I first played the Dark Sun PC game. Dark Sun is my campaign of choice(actually the only campaign I ever play), but only recently have I actually been able to play with an actual group. Unfortunately, By the time I started D&D, Dark Sun was on the way out, so I have had to get pdf files and print them. (not on my printer of course )

I despise the PP, and ignore all of it except for the one where they kill kalak and the one they wage war with uruk. The PP is very poorly written and the characters are one dimensional charicatures.

The only problem I've had is that my group can't roleplay, and approach the game as if it were Diablo 2. They speak in third person, like: "my character asks the mul if he has any weapons for sale" Oh well, better than not playing at all, I guess...

mmm Krispy Kremes......

Well im a newb, to darksun at least, im 17 and ive been playing D&D for about an year and half now. My freind had the dark sun boxed camp setting, the expanded and revised one from 1995, and he left all his stuff at my house, and then had to move, so ive looked at it on several occasions. Then monday i was at a book store and took a peek at dragon, and there was darksun, and i got it and the dungeon too, and im really wanting to start up a campaign with my freinds, i love the feel of the setting, much more than FR, and what ive seen of eberron. Im wanting to play a mul psychic warrior/fighter, a slave gladiator, and i just need to find some people to play with, which is hard where i live.

Cool, it really is much cleaner than the Paizo version, but understand the time constraints if that is a major issue.

Also, fyi, both are considered official since WotC has endorsed both, so the whole using the Paizo one cause it's in an official mag shouldn't be your only qualifier for making it official, since both versions are.

Been roleplaying since 1988, D&D, Vampire Masquerade, Cyberpunk etc. Love Darksun. DM 3E DS, play in a group who still use 2e rules.

Lurked on the boards for ages, so long infact that my previous logon expired, contribute when i have the time - big one for purity of DS, which the new *published* DS (hard copy) has just tried to destroy, shoud have stuck with Athas.org's material, even if Wizards forced some silly stuff on them *who needs balance for defilers?*

I've not been posting for a while as I've not been running Dark Sun but may well be again in the near future so despite having been posting and lurking round here for quite a while I'll disguise myself as a newbie.

Been playing and then running Dark Sun for about 6 years or so now. These days I guess I'm going for d20 Dark Sun rather than D&D Dark Sun so I end up using stuff from a lot of different conversions.

Anyway good to see newbies coming in that aren't 'frightened off' by the (ir-)regulars that hang out here!

AH! The pressure!!! ...Dwelfs! Boobies! AAAAH! I'll Confess! I'll Confess! Here I am, a newb!!!

I'm not as expierenced as a lot of guys here. 15 years, started role-playing a year ago(DnD 3-3.5), started playing shadowrun, and discovered Darksun a while ago. It kicks ass! It's so much cooler than FR, Greyhawk, and even Ravenloft. So much new and original concepts! Alll the races have a twist, a burnt out world, preservers and defilers, elemental clerics, tons of psionics, and Sorcerer Kings! I can't wait to get more into this world.

Well, about me, I'm only good at math ( the best of my country, really, which I can't reveal for fear of prejudice ), I suck at sports, etc. I'm the typical nerd. Ah! The troubles of adolescence!

My english is not so good, and that's about it.

I'm currently looking for a Darksun RP group to join, and free history of Athas and the SK's

AAAhh, Nothing is official. We look down upon your world because Our Lord and Master cannot gain access to it. If Asmodeus cannot gain entry, then it is not official! Now, Paizo's version. . . They have Paladins, Sorcerors, Nice cuddly dwarves, and that means, lots of fresh souls for our Lord and Master to feed off of.

Heh, no Seriously.
Thats just the thing. The version that you find in the Mags is a very simplified, almost wannabe Dark Sun but just can't quite hang. Like someone said in a different thread, it would be more accurate to call the mags version a FR game set in a desert setting. Dark Sun wasn't just about having Thri Kreen, Half giants, Muls and Sorceror Kings. FR had Thri Kreen before DS was printed (Or so it is implied, since the 1st ED DS Box set has a list of Monstrous Compendium creatures that are suitable and TK are there in the FR list).

Dark Sun was about the world, Everyone was Jaded, the Bad Guys ruled nearly every city with an iron fist. No Paladins! There are no Gods, and (and I quote) "There are no Paladins in Dark Sun - the idea of serving good and right for the simple rewards of inner peace anf faith faded from the barren world of Athas long ago." Psionics are mainstay.
You began play typically as a slave, or as a freeman who wasn't free for very long. Templar's words were law, as was the word of their SKs. The creatures were brutal. The attributes ranged from 5-20 instead of 3-18, you began play at 3rd level.

You chose a Half Giant because of the +4 to strength, double hit dice, revolving alignment. Thri Kreen for their leap, multi attacks, paralyzing bite and the ability to fashion your own chaktcha and Gythka's. Was a Half Giant Gladiator more powerful to start than a typical Human fighter? You Bet!! But larger targets usually suffer more of the enemy's attention.

You can make characters from the Paizo/XPH stats, and they will probably fare well against typical D&D creatures of equivalent CR. But, throw them into a True DS setting, with true DS monsters, and they will mot likely turn out to be lunch instead.

Also, fyi, both are considered official since WotC has endorsed both, so the whole using the Paizo one cause it's in an official mag shouldn't be your only qualifier for making it official, since both versions are.

Now, if you are trying to incite interest in the setting from your players... then by all means, run a temporary test using the watered down stuff you find in the mags. But should everyone like the setting and the game in general, I would suggest doing the conversions to get everyone to Athas.Org standard.. or just start over using athas.org. If you get ahold of any of the old material, DS1 or DS2 and the various books and compare to the Paizo version. . . . . Well, it would be like calling Willow a "Lord of the Rings" setting.. well, it has the short people, and the fighters, and the magic, and the evil guy, right?. . . sure, it has a very few similarities, but not nearly enough to get the actual brand name Stamp of approval. Athas.Org has the celebrity sports star endorsements, the MegaAde: Official Drink of Athas, and all of the other stuff that True Dark Sun deserves.

*Note MegaAde is owned and licensed by Asmodeus. Failure to read the warning label could result in your soul being forever sucked into oblivion while you spend the rest of eternity wandering the various planes of existence trying to sell MegaAde contracts door to door.

So to recap. Athas.Org = Tastes Great
Dragon/Dungeon version = Less Filling

Nyt, you are soo naughty!

So, I'm going to post here because, while I'm not really a newbie, I'm definitely a bit of a lurker. I've been reading the DS boards since sometime during the early period of the old boards. Never posted until recently though.

I dismissed DS as 'that powergamer world' long ago after seeing a friend's fire cleric write up. Never really looked at it (though I remember enjoying the first computer game when it came out).

I actually started reading the boards out of boredom, but was converted by the energy and excitement of the posters. So, I started reading up on the setting, slowly getting the source material. Now, I think I have everything except for the books. I've got half of the books, out of order, and have only read the first. (Not an impressively complex book. Kinda felt like a knock off. But most of the TSR books that I've read felt like that and the book was entertaining enough. Maybe I'll get the rest of the books and read through the various series this summer.)

Anyway, I rarely play and never DM right now due to a busy schedual. I have been turning over a DS Campaign in my mind, going so far as to even start to begin one.

Hopefully, I'll follow through soon.

I'm a student/circus performer and I'm in my second last year of highschool. I usualy participate in generic campeigns, but I'm trying to get my group involved in DS. I was roped into gaming by highschool friends (about fourteen years ago) with serious misgivings "why the hell would i want to play an imaginary game with dice?"
Our DM was outstanding, wierd, funny - very clever and inspiring. There are things we did in his games that still make us laugh after all these years. We had alot of fun during those early years.

That same group of friends is still gaming (though obviously alot less these days) & between us own & play a number of different systems (we've always preferred D&D though); my taste has alway been toward the more eclectic, I've a bit of an interest in materials science & nanotechnology, the application & guts of psionics/magic/psionic enchantments/lifeshaping (ie: biological nanotech).

I've DM'd several diceless, paper & penless games (trickier than it sounds) of Mage, Paranoia and D&D & enjoyed them thoroughly - not something you want to do often, but its fun to put your players in the thick of an adventure/setting as themselves... its a great challenge for a DM to steup up and really tell/involve the players in a story too. Freeform roleplaying is perhaps a step too far - having a DM bring the whole thing together really makes a huge difference.... maybe something DisruptorX & others with roll-players may want to try

I thought there was alot of interesting work in Prism Pentad but also alot that I disagreed with, I very much disagreed with the loss of the Sorcerer Kings... mostly for selfish reasons though, I've been working on one campaign idea (that i can't shake) since before Dark Sun came about & the setting it presented was a simply a god-send... it lacked alot of detail or was simply incomplete, but it's been also brought alot of ground-breaking, workable ideas & therefore forgivable - hell, it's better than I could have done.

Speaking of which, I'd like to mention a brief word of thanks to the artists, especially Baxa and his contemporaries for really helping bring an unfamiliar (potentially alien) setting to life & to everybody else whose contributed (including players who just get into the game).

Brom, Dollar's works in Kreen of Athas, and DiTerlizzi's efforts in Elves and City-state of Tyr were pretty impressive. Baxa's a great volume artist, don't get me wrong, but the descriptions of the monsters and his drawings are usually a bit off.

And what's the deal with the big, mud-rock hats? Some of his stuff is amazing, while some leaves a bit to be desired. My pick for best DS artist is still Brom.

But I was turned on to darksun, when I saw the poster in the room of one of the Guys that taught me to play.... And Like most young players I wanted to be a powerful Half giant... (It would be later that I learned the use of a cunning theif.) Anyway It would still be a few years before I really got into Darksun, Then I bought the revised boxset, and as the bible sais... It was good. So things being as they are I slowly acquired stuff, incorparated my own rules and such, and now I have a duffle bag with my books, plus some PDF(?) on the laptop.

So look I hate power players and monti hall games... The last game I played had these 10-14th level characters some got 18 attacks a round, the mage, could cast a spell that did 1000 pts dmg. What did I do? I made a kobald witchdocter 3d6 straightdown (we did modifie two stats so I could be WD) ohyea 1st lvl... He was pimp, wore dead rats for shoes, he would "bless" them and they "acted" as boots of elven kind, this was one of the many charms he had that really did nothing.... I knock the ______ out of a 5th level barbarian, we ate dwarf stew (even the Palidin) And we even ate halfling.... most of the other characters were turned off by this... But the Gith, Minotaur, and allahEE Ate good... Well end of the game, I cut the face off of the dead wore it for my own and moped.... That was a fun game....

Okay, in order to ensure that I get no more emails about the topic, I would like to state for the record that my previous statement about the infamous Piazo articles was a farce, a total load of crap, misinterpreted wit, a bit of snuff, a crass and misleading statement, etc, etc. Apparently, sarcasm is lost on some people.

I do NOT like them, Sam I am. I will not read them in a box, I will not read them with a fox. Period.

Thanks for letting me make myself a bit more clear on my stance.

Have a good day, Citizen!

Oh! The Boobies and teets and dragons too!

I cannot resist! :D

My name is Marcello and I'm a Dark Sun addict. I'm 25 years old and have been playing RPGs for almost 15 years.

I Have played nearly anything under the sun, but was the big, scorching Sun of Athas that enraptured me on a beautiful summer day back in '92. I have read all supplements and novels (ok, I admit that I never read Cinnabar Shadows) and everything I could get my hands on (old Dragon Magazines etc).

I was really upset seeing what they made of Athas on the new magazines, having the Athas.org version avaible.

I lurk a lot around here, as I have not DM'd a DS session on a long time. But we plan to have a great campaign on Athas begining next month. :D

PS: Forgive my bad english.
