Jousting and tournaments

I saw the movie "A Knight's Tale" the other day and it reminded me of the notes on jousting and tournaments in the old Companion Set, where a character could become Master of the Tournament or something if he had won so-and-so many jousts.

Do you use jousting and tournaments in your campaigns?

It seems to me that the only nation with a medieval setting for it would be Karameikos and maybe Darokin? (and of course the Heldannic Knights if you use them)

I'm thinking it could be an interesting background feature in a campaign: the tournaments are like the world championships; people come from near and far to watch them, place bets on their favourites, trade and gossip etc. The PC's can hear rumours in different towns and villages ("Yes, that Sir Boris is a brave one. I reckon he'll be Tournament Champion this year. Did you hear he knocked all 14 opponents of their horses at the field at Kelvin?")

Furthermore, becomming Tournament Champion might be a way to get a commission in the army, a title or even a small barony on the frontier?

Does anyone have a copy of the basic module Sword & Shield? It's not very good as I recall but it does have some interesting rules for jousting with lances.

Given the origin of the Heldannic Knights, you can probably use this in much of Thyatis too, also I would think that Norwold would fit for this.

Futher it could be an entertainment of non-magic users in Glantri and Alphatia with a little modification - looked down on by the gentry, but the main hope of the non-magical for glory.

As Kheldren pointed out, Thyatis might very well have jousts as well- not just amongst the Hattians, but also among the Kerendans, who are noted horsemen.

I can see the Thyatians having Tournament type events in their Coluseums. The Romans used to have all kinds of battles there, including sea battles, so why not jousting aswell?

Check out the Pendragon RPG for more ideas and rules on Tournaments. It also details other tourney evens than just jousting including "The Battle" a mock battle using wooden weapons, with knights and foot soldiers.

For a Knights based campaign, the DM might want to grant extra XPs for heroic feats performed during tournaments.

And Ierendi, of course.
I think it could also be interesting, with some cultural variations, in Ethengar, and Undersea.
(The idea of centaur-tournaments always seemed to me as a promising one.)

Realistically, Centaurs wouldnt be suited for jousting. Since jousting is about making your opponent fall off the horse, that would mean that the losing Centaur would break his (human) back. I agree that the idea is cool though, so maybe we should just ignore realism? ;)

Most cultures probably have their own kind of tournaments. The Northern Reaches gaz lists some Troll activities like "Kick the chicken", toss the tiger" and "Ram the tree". I never felt the "Toss the Tiger" one made sense since tigers are hardly norse creatures. Lynx would be better, though the alliteration would be lost. Antalians (Norsemen) probably have their own sports too, like axe throwing competitions or running along the oars of longships. Glantrians and have their spell pits (see other thread). Other ideas?

I love trolls, their so stupid. My players usually stumbled on a group of trolls playing "pull the arms." Where the trolls would all jump on eachother and pull eachothers arms off. The winner of course would be the remaining troll with at least one arm. Made for some interesting fights afterwards when the players would ambush them.

I've got it!
The Double-Lanced-Centaur-Jousting-Tournament !!!

It goes like this: Every centaur has a human (or elven or some sort of bipedal for that matter) rider. BOTH have lances. You still have to knock down the rider - but the whole fight is double-lanced!

Or how about this:

Each centaur wears a potted shrub strapped to its head, and the object is to knock the shrub off the opposing lancer's noggin.

Without knocking the Centaurs noggin off.

That said, that sounds pretty cool.
