Psionics?

I know that psionics are not a part of Krynn, so we can leave that right out. But what about using the d20 psionics system for sorcery, since the PHB sorcerer is both unappealing and rubbish? I'm currently experimenting with a wilder, who has two 'spells' - a crystal shard thing (damage) and skate. Sicne he is playing a cryomancer, the crystal shard thing appears as a large, sharp piece of ice, and the skate thing includes freezing the soles of his feet, and sliding around on the ice from that.

I don't remember much else about the D&D spells, but other than ray of frost and cone of cold, and taking elemental substitution feats, there are bum-all cold spells, and the wilder seems to be able to vary what he does far more than a PHB sorcerer.

Sure, the psionics rules have an appeal to them in that they're not only spontaneous and flexible but they can now accomodate such things as augmentation of basic powers and a tighter degree of balance with the other PHB classes. The Julian May/Marion Zimmer Bradley-esque science fantasy approach to names and powers isn't very compatible with Dragonlance but a lot of that's probably semantics. It's at least a model you could pursue if you wanted to do a little work.

Me, I don't find the PHB sorcerer unappealing or rubbish, but tweaking it is always a fun exercise.

I’ve often felt that the psionics system could, in part, be used to simulate ambient magic, especially mysticism, for Dragonlance. Some psionics powers would translate nicely. For example, psychometabolism would work nicely as the sphere of Channeling. The augmentation of powers would help to simulate spellshaping to a degree. You may want to use some metapsionic feats as well.

If you’re going to mix and match psionic powers and PHB spells, then you’ll have a slight problem in that the new XPH (Expanded Psionics Handbook) powers are augmentable, while PHB spells are not. With a little work, you might make them fit, or you could use the 3.0 psionics rules. I would recommend staying with the 3.5 psionics rules, though.

I’ve considered doing an alternate psion (Channeler?), which would work in a similar fashion. You have a base list of spells (PHB wizard/sorcerer list) then you get “discipline spells” (realms of sorcery, spheres of mysticism ala my Paths of Magic list).

Go with whichever rules fit the concept or role that you’re trying to emulate. Certainly, the psionics rules would give a lot of feel to the DL sorcerer and mystic.

I've been wondering how I could incorporate Psionics into the DragonLance world. I know that it isn't considered to be part of the whole thing, but I've always been a fan of Psionics. One idea I had was that since Paladine is now mortal, maybe he brings Psionics to Krynn. I know he isn't suppose to have any type of godly powers, but I thought it would be a nice twist to introduce Psionics.

Just a thought.
