The guys over on the Monsters part of the web site were non responsive and since you guys are great, I am hoping I can get some help from you guys. I was looking up possible animal companions for one of my players who is playing a Druid and I was looking at the Ape, not the Dire Ape just the normal animal. Is it supposed to be large? It doesn't come close to matching the large category for hieght or wieght? 5-1/2 to 6 ft tall and 300 to 400 lbs. I know these are general rules but this is off by 2 to 3 ft and 100 to 200 lbs. I just am having a hard time seeing it as large compared to its Dire counterpart? Besides, it looks like the other animals on that part of the Druid companion list, besides the horse or camel, are medium. The entry for the ape takes into account the large size category for reach, AC mod, BA mod, etc... but I can't seem to understand why large based on the height and weight of the creature. Any help would be great. Thanks.

I wouldn't know on this one . But I could make a suggestion instead of useing height use the CR or Hit Dice to determine which is large or unique. list tiny as common, small as fairly common, medium as rare, and large as either very rare, if theirs and XL allowance make that one unique. this way instead of the actual size an animals CR or hit dice could be used to determine whether or not it may be a Druids companion.
