I had a thought last night and I wasn't sure on the answer.

During the time that the dead are stealing magic on Krynn, would a Detect Undead spell show them up? Are they undead or just dead?

I think they're dead dead. So therefore not subject to detect undead.

well, the spell 'detect undead' didnt really exist in the early fifth age. Spiritualists knew that the spirits were there though, as many classes were dedicated to talking to them, or in the case of the nightstalker, hunting them. Necromancers dealt with corporeal undead.

This is where I'm puzzled, because they are (in the War of Souls trilogy) ghosts, so...

Its a long way off in my DL game before the dead start stealing magic, but I'm trying to plan ahead. It could be interesting to see them cast it looking for something only to find themselves surrounded by the dead who are now feeling up the spellcaster.

That sounds spooked out.

I'd say they're ghosts. That is, souls that haven't been able to leave the mortal realm after death. Thus, undead. Thus, detectable by the detect undead spell.
