Yes, I know I have posted this subject before, but that was long before the Bestiary of Krynn came out.

Anyway, with the Bestiary (and its priceless encounter tables) in the hands of many fans on this site, I was wondering how the Wizards of the Coast monster books fit into the mix. Can one ignore Monster Manual II, Fiend Folio, etc? I know select monsters from each are DL useable, such as the sirines from MMII, but what about the rest?

Don't forget about Monster Manual III. It comes out in a couple months.

Anyway...I was hoping this thread was about a Bestiary of Krynn II...

So, just ignore me.

I never picked up MM 2, The Fiend Folio, etc. I just use my 3 core rulebooks, and the DL stuff.

As with anything in the wonderful world of gaming, it is your game. If you see a monster in another source that you like, come up with a convincing reason for it's existance and go to town. Maybe it's race lived on an Island far from the mainland and recent events have forced a migration. What could cause this? (Can you say Adventure hook???)

It's kind of weird. A lot of monsters that would probably otherwise be okay in Dragonlance...because of the liscensing agreement with WotC, can't be officially named anymore. It's not like when DL gaming was part of TSR/WotC...anything in any book was free game unless otherwise noted. Now...most of that is DM discretion only...because the stuff from the Fiend Folio, MMII, MMIII, Draconomicon and any other book that has creatures in it, is not OGL...so it can't be used.

But...that's why we're cool as fans...we can talk about it, in an unofficial capacity...but we've got the designers here too who can talk about it as well...again in an unofficial capacity...but that's about as good as it's gonna get, it seems.

Dragonlance does not fall under the OGL. It's a direct license from WotC to Sov. Press.
