3E loosening the Curse of the Magi

I was reading something in a DL book recently (can't recall which one) about the curse of the magi and I realized that in 3e it's a little less solid.

Spell Mastery helps with the whole "memorizing" issue.

The Archmage (core version) PrC helps some more, with the Arcane Fire (didn't prepare damaging spells? doesn't matter!) and Spell-Like Ability High Arcana both messing with the "prepare/memorize" portion of the curse.

The Concentration Skill makes it a great deal harder to interrupt the concentration of a Wizard now, and Quickened Spells pretty much can't be interrupted at all, unless whatever's interrupting it is already on you.

Signature Spell (not the [Epic] one, the other one) is currently an FR feat but will most likely be made available to spellcasters everywhere with Complete Arcane, allowing you to spontaneously cast one spell.

I think the way I'll handle it if it comes up is that the gods of magic are a little more inclined to leniency now that they have to compete with primal sorcery again.

Is it just me or did the events in War of Souls seem partially designed to paving the way for 3E Dragonlance?

If I'm correct, (which I like to think I am), Arcane Fire is a FR thing. It could be used by any DL dm that wanted it, but it hasn't been used in any DL canon that I know of. And it seems that the whole 5th Age was designed for D&D 3E, (like whoever did the SAGA rules had a clue of what was going to happen in a few years) with the whole spontaneous casters and such.

Arcane Fire is generic D&D. Its in the DMG's core prestige class, Arch Mage. I wouldnt be surprised to see a few NPC's with levels in the class in the upcoming Towers of High Sorcery supplement.

Yeah...but there is the "Curse of the Magi" variant rule in the DLCS. You have to make a Fortitude Save (or was it Will?) vs. a DC of 10 + spell level everytime you cast a spell. If you fail that, your fatigue level goes up one for a certain number of rounds. I can't remember the exact details...but it's in there. Most people find it vicious...but it may be just what you're looking for.

I'm not really looking for anything, other than possible in-game explanations. I've already got one, but wanted to know if others used different ones.
