I like the Dragonslayer class from the Draconmicon, and use it in my DL games (One player has taken the PrC) but a recent discussion on another board made me think.

When the class referes to its abilities against dragons, is that just "true" dragons or would it apply to draconians and dragonspawn as well?

And if it applies to anything with the "Dragon" type, does that make the class too powerful in a DL campaign?

Thoughts?

As I see it the Dragonslayer PrC only "works" against true dragons...my vision of the Dragonslayer is a person who hates dragons for some (alleged) crime a dragon has comitted against him, his kin, friends or his community...or who´s after their treasure.

This person trains specifically to fight against dragons, finding their weak spots and to anticipate their moves...moving how a dragon moves and fights doesn´t do squat against a draconian...just because it haas the dragon subtype doesn´t make it the same as fighting a true dragon...

It's hard to tell from the description, since it doesn't say "true dragon" but it also doesn't say "creatures with the dragon type". Since the Draconomicon covers all things draconic, not just true dragons, I would suggest that it applies to any creature with the dragon type - including dragon turtles, wyverns, tylors, draconians, and dragonspawn (as amended in the Key of Destiny).

This isn't any more unbalanced in a Dragonlance campaign than a non-DL campaign, especially since dragons aren't more common on Krynn than other worlds. Whole campaigns can go by without the heroes meeting very many dragons or dragon-typed creatures, and in those periods when the dragonslayer isn't facing dragons he's going to find that his special abiliies aren't much use.

Cheers,
Cam

I am surprised to hear you say that. Apart from that time following Huma when dragons were not a part of Krynn, I see it that dragons are a common sight or are at least a lot more common that on other D&D worlds.

Interesting how different people view the setting.

Ah...the time between Huma and the War of the Lance was nearly 1400 years.

Additionally, it was the time where most novels and campaigns were set.

Dragons also become incredibly rare after the Dragon Purge.

Additionally, after the previous dragon wars, didn't the dragons of both types leave Ansalon?

Dragons are probably less common in Dragonlance than you think.
