Well, i'm disappoint by the gladiator 3.5 from athas.org . It seem underpower compared to a brute or a fighter.

How many of you play instead a fighter? or have modified this class and what have you done?

I'm not sure it's underpowered. It really depends on how much you value the d12 HD. If you value those hp highly, it's balanced with fighter. If not, it's slightly underpowered.

It is rather specialized, however, with pre-chosen feats. It's also rather flavorful. I wouldn't count the weak but flavorful bits against the class when making comparisons.

well, Exotic proficiency, Arena guile and Armor optimization are very limited. It is because of that that i feel it is weak.

Damage Reduction, Bonus Fighter Feat, Rage, that's useful.

In second edition the Gladiator was a force to be reckoned with, a melee warrior and the fighter more of a tactical warrior. It lost all that flavor.

I have a mul gladiator PC in my campaign. I'll let you know how he fares in the upcoming sessions, but he seemed to like the class and even thought it was a little powerful!

Well as far as my campaign goes, it's hard to say, but I the gladiator from athas.org seem a bit underpowered. The player who play the mul gladiator took 3 ranks within, then took some 3 brutes, now he consider taking fighter stuff but seem no longer interested in getting rank in the gladiator, saying that it's abilities are limited.

Yes, i have the same opinion that your player.

I was supposed to create a 10th level gladiator for my game and after comparing the classes, i'm now sure without a doubt, that a 10th level fighter or a 10th level brute will beat the crap out of a 10th gladiator with ease.

And after that, the gladiator is supposed to be THE force in a melee fight.

In case anybody is interested. Kenzer's Kingdoms of Kalamar Player's Guide features a Gladiator class that is similar in some ways to athas.org's. It only has a d10 hit die and 2 skill points per level, but it gets almost the exact same feinting abilities as the athas gladiator, and an ability similar to the bonus exotic weapon proficiency feats.

Its missing a couple of the athas abilities and adds a couple of its own, but all in all, I'd say the two were balanced with each other.

I just use the regular fighter class. If a player wants to play a gladiator-like character they can taylor make one with their feats, skills, and weapon selections.

Nice and simple

Flavour my friend, flavour! It's for it's uniqueness that it's playerbase like darksun. The gladiator MUST be a PC class. Maybe it need to be reworked, but it's stilll needed in the settings. It's too flavorful and representative of athas harsh world. If it's just called a fighter in the pit... sound bad.

Well, you'd call the character a gladiator, but it would mechanically be a fighter.

Eh, every time we come out with a new version of the gladiator we always have a group that think it's too underpowered or too overpowered.

Here's my advice, if you find it so, then change it more to your needs.

Currently it's balanced, after going through as many transitions as it has it can be nothing but that.

Not going to please everyone I guess, heh.
