Converting Planescape NPCs

I've decided to start collecting/converting stats for Planescape NPCs in 3rd Ed. stats....using some of the conventions from my campaign....some will be a bit higher in level, etc.

I've got Kylie as a Rogue8/Sorcerer2.

Autochon the Bellringer is a Fighter 13.

I'm thinking of making Kesto Brighteyes something like an Illusionist 9/Loremaster 4. Or use one of the Athar prestige classes that are floating around, like on Kriegstanz, if there's a suitable one.

Wooly Cupgrass.....Bariaur Expert 4 or 5? He makes potions, right? So he should have the Brew Potion feat.....but that means he needs to be a spellcaster, and Wooly definitely wasn't perceived as a spellcaster. Anyone have any ideas?

Would Adamok Eben be a Cleric/Ranger? Or a Cleric/Fighter/Bounty Hunter, perhaps?

I'd make sure that Kesto Brighteyes has enough summoning power to summon Saure from Carceri. Other than that, Loremaster seems a good choice.

Wooly is more of a potion identifier and trader than someone who makes them, but I wouldn't have any problem with making him a spellcaster if you want to let him make them as well. I think he would make a good sorcerer.

Adamok Ebon should be a ranger. Anything else is gravy.

I've got Saure listed as a Ranger 4/Ur-Priest 2. The Ur-Priest levels reflect her hatred of the gods and also allow her to use clerical magic to parade corpses down the street. The ranger levels help her hunt.

I kept Skall as a 19th level wizard, assuming he had once been far higher level but in recent centuries or millennia he has stopped his arcane researches in favor of contemplation into the nature of death, and still occasionally sacrificed XP for wishes, magic items, and self-augmentations. However, I gave him some demilich abilities, under the theory that he had once been a demilich but returned to his corporeal body as a "mere" lich in order to educate others. He also has the blightfire ability from the epic level handbook and he's runecarved, as per MMII. I feel no remorse for giving him a ton of extra powers.

My version of Ely Cromlich has him being a 17th level fighter and a 1st level unholy warrior, as per Green Ronin's Unholy Warrior's Handbook. The main purpose of that is to affirm his devotion to Vecna and give him a detect magic ability. He also has a lot of Doomguard weapon feats from the planewalker.com conversions.

Rowan Darkwood looks like this:

Factol Rowan Darkwood
Male Human Prime
23rd level ranger/3rd level divine agent of Heimdall

Fated (factol)
Chaotic Good

Str 24 Int 18
Dex 18 Wis 21
Con 21 Cha 19

Divine agents are from the Manual of the Planes. The ability scores take into account the conversion rules, which means he also gets a lot of extra ability points from his high level.

Thanks Rip....those are some good suggestions. I may integrate some of them. I'll likely need to change Adamok Eben's alignment to fit the ranger class, but other than that, I agree, Ranger appears to be the best fit.

As to Skall, I was going to have him as a 19th level wizard, use the Lich template, and then use the Lich "age" abilities from the Ravenloft campaign setting....they get an ability for every century of lichhood, or something like that. I figure he's also got a few faction feats, as well as permanent magic effects, due to the Permanency spell.

Ely Cromlich I was going to have as a 19th lvl Fighter, half-human/half-fiend. Swap out the 4th lvl half-fiend spell-like ability for Polymorph Self. Give him a bunch of Doomguard feats.....maybe actually have one of the Doomguard prestige classes....there was one in Dragon magazine, and another at Kriegstanz, I think.

Your take on Rowan Darkwood is a bit different though. In Faces of Sigil, he was equal levels as both ranger and cleric.....he's actually an Epic character, IMO, so I was going to have him be level 25.....maybe split him Ranger 12/Cleric 13, or something like that.

Regardless.....did you post your conversions anywhere Rip? I'd be interested in seeing them.

I like your ideas about Skall, but I don't have any Ravenloft books myself.

Most of them are works in progress. Ely is almost done, but I'm stuck on his biography. I have a non-epic Darkwood at www.geocities.com/ripvanwormer/darkwood.html (bottom of the page), which I did before the ELH rules got in the System Reference Document and thus available to me for free.

In my opinion Ranger 23/Divine Agent 3 is the best approximation of his 2nd edition status. It lets him be epic as a ranger, instead of only mid-level, and 3rd level divine agent gives him the divine abilities he needs. Being a tremendously powerful cleric was never an important part of his character - it was more the status of being an important agent of Heimdall, and the idea of him remaking himself. Putting half your levels in a spellcasting class is generally a bad idea in 3rd edition anyway.

Is there a Prestige Class in the Complete Divine that allows a character to progress in both divine magic and warrior abilities? Sort of like the Mystic Theurge or the Eldritch Knight?

I checked out that Spellstitched prestige class....very good idea Rip....very nasty prestige class, and pretty much a "must have" for any lich with a brain.

There actually is an Athar Prestige Class in Dragon #287, September 2001.

That class is for priests though, whereas Kesto is an Illusionist.

I've got Kylie as a Rogue8/Sorcerer2.

The new Planar Handbook has complete stats for Kylie the Tout on p. 146 in the Sigil section. They have her as a Tiefling Rogue 8 (no sorcerer levels, but you could always tack them on.)

Check out the new Planar Handbook, it's pretty cool!

Yeah, I'm starting to read through it, but just finishing Eberron first. However, there are a few things I'd do differently than how they did Kylie. To start with, 5-6 years of campaign time have gone by during this game, when the PCs first met Kylie, so I think it's fair to say she's gained two levels...the PCs have gained 12 in that time, afterall...
