i intend to pick up the gazeteer soon, but what novels or old source books would be a good source of information on the power players, politics, geography, etc... of greyhawk

Ok, you will easily find answers on a similar thread "essential greyhawk" but i would say:
Forget novels, if you are new they won't help you too much.
The gazeeter is very cool and complete, but you may lack of stats in term of gameplay so, if you find them you can buy:
From the ashes boxed set and city of greyhawk boxed set. With those 2 boxes you have enough for years of gameplay in the plains of greyhawk and on whole oerth.
Other stuff will help you( prefere C. Sargent and old Gygax ones) but if you are beginning a campaign try first to learn the base of Oerth( politic/religion/history) in this books and the gazeeter, and
1) write little scenarii in town or cairn hills to familiarize your players with the world, there 's plenty of plots and idea in the 2 boxed set
2) Or buy a big campaign module like Return to temple of Elemental Evil ( or "the temple of elmental evil" wich is better IMHO but harder to find) and throw your player in.
Do you have old scenarii already?

I actually DO recommend some novels... But they are both out of date, and out of Print.

If your interest in Greyhawk has been spawned by LG, the novels won't do you much good...

But, go out and find Saga of Old City, and Artifact of Evil, both by E. Gary Gygax.

They are set 15+ years before the "present" date, but are the best resource for the "feel" of what Greyhawk was like before the Greyhawk Wars.
