Coming back to Dragonlance

Hi everyone, I'm a newcomer to this board, usually I post on Dark Sun.

Recently I was bored and thought I'd crack open my old Dark Sun Chronicles and start reading again. It had been a while. The nostalgia got me into breaking out my copy of the Dragonlance Tales of the Lance boxed set and thinking about starting a campaign again. My question is this, does the new Dragonlance Campaign Setting book allow for campaigning in this era?

Thanks!

Oh yeah...especially if you have Tales of the Lance boxed set. But there is very little 4th Age specific info. For that...there is another book coming out later this summer called the War of the Lance sourcebook. It should be chalked full of goodies. 200 pages (I think...maybe it was more), but at 1,000 words per page instead of the 750 from the earlier books. It'll be full of good Age of Despair stuff.

Well, nothing says you can't but it's not particularly geared towards it. Not that it's affected me doing so one way or the other. But most of the basic stuff draconians, bound spirit, spectral minion, death knight templates, and what-not are in there. There's supposed to be a War of the Lance book coming out soon. (I'm a little curious to see if and how they address the mechanics of Lorac's Evil Dream, since the conclusion of my arc of that was the last session I did, and it took me a long time to figure out a way to work it that I was happy with.)

For me, the worst thing about the book was the organization of it, and the lack of a real high quality map. For the most part it's pretty decent, and beats doing the conversion yourself, which I did have to do at one point.

Just out of curiosity...what about the organization didn't you like? I found it pretty straight forward (like other WotC products in set up, I thought).

The way the NPC's of note were haphazardly scattered around, sometimes in an aside sometimes not. Really, and this is just MY ignorant opinion, but all of chapter 6 is pretty much a mess. I would have put all the items save perhaps Tamak war paint, and the shadowstaff in Chapter three with the rest of the magic. The timeline would have been better off in Chapter nine. The stuff on Gods/Cosmology of Krynn is scattered through three chapters (excepting the moon Gods and their role in magic).

I understand what Nature means. Personally, I would have liked for the book to have a standard format. A section for Magic Items and NPCS was really not that hard to do. Instead all the magical items and NPC write-ups are scatter across the book. The maps where very unclear as well, for example you’ll be reading about Kharolis but that portion wouldn’t show up on the map on that same page, instead it will be three pages away. That’s just an example, I don’t think Kharolis was even cover in the maps.

Hey all, thanks for the help,

I was mainly concerned about the rules, so that I wouldn't have to convert. Most of the background story, as well as the wonderful, incredible maps, are located in the Tales of the Lance Boxed Set, which I have.

Thanks again!

In my opinion, the Dragonlance Campaign is exactly what you need. It describes all the races, classes and the world in a D&D3.5 view that is quite easy to follow and more user friendly than the old AD&D books...

It contains all the necessary rules and the conversion of the old material won't be difficult.
Moreover, Dragonlance has a strong internet community to help you find your way.

So, don't hesitate and fly with the dragons...
