I have noticed that the FR Sourcebooks and other setting books aswell include options for different creatures to be used as Wizard's familiars.

Are there any Mystara specific creatures that could be used as familars?

The wizards of Glantri have that small creature Manikin created from the Mandragora plant or something...

IMC we have had a Tabi familiar for a Gnomish Wizard. My initial 3e conversion of a Tabi proved a little powerfull as a familiar for a wizard of his then level.
So heres the Savage Species style Monster Class for Tabi I created to help scale it better. Let me know what you think.

Tabi
Tiny Monstrous Humanoid
Racial Traits
· Starting Ability Score Adjustments: -6 Str , +4 Dex , +2 Int , -2 Ws
· Size: Tiny
· Speed: 20 , Flying 40
· Lowlight vision 60ft
· Saving Throw bonus: +2 vs Poison and Fear effects
· Claws 1d4 damage
Class Skills: Hide, Listen, Move Silently, Spot, Sleight of Hand , Climb , Balance , Search , Gather Information , Knowledge.

Level HD BAB Fort Ref Will Skill Points Special
1st 1d8 +1 +0 +2 +2 (2+Int mod) x4 Feat , Multiattack , Weapon Finesse (Claw)
2nd 2d8 +2 +0 +3 +3 2+Int Mod Scent
3rd 3d8 +3 +1 +3 +3 2+Int Mod Feat
4th 4d8 +4 +1 +4 +4 2+Int Mod Rotting Blight
5th 5d8 +5 +1 +4 +4 2+Int Mod Poison
Special Abilities:
· Rotting Blight: All Tabi can produce a rotting smell at will. At 4th Level this smell becomes pungent enough to act as a Stinking Cloud (centred on self) 1/day (4 rounds duration , Fort save DC 14)
· Poison: Tabi of this level secrete natural blue venom from small glands below their horny fingernails. This Poison has an Initial damage 1 Wis and Secondary damage as a Confusion spell lasting 5 rounds , with Fort save of DC 15.

Not sure, but what about a Phanaton? They're supposed to be more intelligent than normal animals though (since they're tribal), so this should probably be an advanced option.

The draconomicon provides the option of using young wyrmlings as familiars. Perhaps we could do the same with juvenile versions of Mystaran monsters. Young Aranea anyone?

Slightly off topic (but related) what kind of familiars would Herathians have? Giant silk worms? Flies, wasps, bees?

I think phanatons might work, but limited to advanced familiars. They are definately more intelligent than normal animals, since they can be pcs....

I'd be more hesitant to use young araneas or dragons. Mystara has pocket dragons though, which would be perfect for this kind of thing.

I like the idea of Herathians using giant insects (Robber Flies, Killer bees) or even Stirges...
