I read a book out of my school library many years ago (1985?) that was about a young wizard set on a fantasy world. I remember very clearly a world map on the inside of the cover that had an island, shaped like a hand, that was called "The Hand" or some such thing. I remember a description of the boys village being huts on stilts or some such thing. This was about the time I started playing D&D and I may be projecting some Greyhawk qualities on it. My DM said it may have been "Quag Keep" but I checked and that wasn't it. Any ideas?

The only novel I know that comes close is The Demon Hand, book 3 of the Mika the Wolf-Shaman series. It was set on Dramidja Island if memory serves me.

Sounds like the Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula LeGuin.
It's a very cool quartet of fantasy novels with a very low magic/gritty feel. The third book "The Farthest Shore" is the best.

And as any of you who've read it will attest - any similarity between the College of Roke and Hogwarts in Harry Potter (which appeared years after Earthsea) is purely coincidental... :P
