-------------------- PLAYERS KEEP OUT! ------------------------------------

Sorry for the harsh intro, but some of my players are roaming this board and they need to know which posts not to read :D

I am toying with the idea of letting my party find a Crystal Hypnosis Ball (DMG page 234) so my question to you is:

Which mage / lich / bad guy on Mystara would have put such a devious item into circulation? And for what purpose?

I was thinking about Bargle but I am not sure he is powerful enough to have created this minor artifact?

Depends where your campaign is located, how about the Master - the item seems to be something that a follower of Bozdogan would be keen on.

Or maybe Pyre put out word that there's this fantastic magic item possible of spying on her even given the ebon eye. And thn she seeds this item in a dungeon somewhere for intrepid heroes to find.

My campaign is situated all over the Known World from Ostland to Darokin and Denagoth to Minrothad Guilds. I haven't introduced the Savage Coast, Norwold, Hollow World or Alphatia to the players yet, but I plan to along the way.

I am not going to let the Master be the source, because they are going up against him when they have attained another 5 levels or so and it would be a shame if the only wizard in the party was charmed by him before the war even started.

And I don't use Pyre because I don't know much about her except for a few things I read at the Vault.

But since the party will find the crystal ball in Ylaruam I was thinking about Barimoor or whatever his name is - the evil badguy with the cave system and monsterous armies beneath the desert. He seems powerful enough, but what could he hope to gain from having a Glantrian wizard hypnotized? Perhaps he wants someone assasinated? Or maybe he is just out to collect whatever magical trinckets his victims might have?

You can read more about Pyre in the Orcs Head accessory which is available as a free download at WotC's site in the downloads section under Savage Coast.

For an Ylari Wizard having created the Crystal Ball, Barimoor would do the trick.

I also think Bargle would work, but I haven't had time to look at the details for this item. Bargle is IIRC a 15th level Wizard (in OD&D) in AC1000. If your campaign is set in AC 1010+, he should probably have acqired a couple of more levels IMO.

Offhand, I could think of several reasons for him to create something like that:

1) He loves to have spies on the surface world to keep him apprised of the political and social situations aboveground for the day when he makes his move against the Upper World. IIRC, Gaz2 mentions that he has several "sleeper" agents working for him- mostly through the use of his soul daggers, which he can use to activate them for whatever he wants, leaving them with no memory of the events. A crystal hypnosis ball would do something similar.

2) As for particulars of why a wizard, or a Glantrian wizard- recall that he is questing for Immortality, and the path he is on requires him to be declared the superior wizard for 100 miles around (or something- can't think of the specifics offhand). To that end, having a hypnotized wizard would be a good thing for him. Even moreso, having an agent in Glantri would be key for accomplishing both this task and the above task (spying)- because the wizardly nation is probably his single greatest threat in the Known World.
