Clerics switching Faiths

I cannot remember if I asked this, but I meant to. In older editions, there was a penalty for switching faiths. The more severe the switch, the worse the penalty. It used to result in level loss. Any word on whether the penalty is still in effect?

My example is that we have a Cleric of Mishakal in our party. She has been struggling with the nurturing factor of being a Priest of Healing. She prefers to Fight. Since she is pretty close to the KoS in the Party, she is contemplating switching faiths to Kiri-Jolith. What kind of kick-back should the DM hit her with?

Clerics of Mishakal aren't pasifist(sp) even though they seem like they most likely would be. If someone is threatening a cleric of Mishakal they may defend themselves, and take the appropiate actions. And they don't have to heal the foe after defeating them either.

Yes in the earlier editions the character took level loss. But in the current edition they didn't say if they took a level loss or not. So if a cleric switches faiths its no big deal. Unless it goes against their alignment, if their alignment didn't shift.

As a DM, I don't think I would, as a rule, impose a level loss on one of my cleric players for switches faith in one god for another, so long as they were in the same alignment. Wizards changing orders or "faith" in one god for another, I would for sure though.

If I recall, the 3E core books have information on exactly what happens when a cleric changes deities...IIRC the cleric does go a time without magical ability....but thats just my memory speaking, not books in front of me

thanks Serena. Do u think you can get a bit more information for us. I remeber Dragonlance Adventures had a few paragraphs on this problem. Does that information still bind?
